A French Valley father pleaded not guilty Tuesday to molesting his daughter's 12-year-old friend while she perused the Megan's Law sex offender website.

Johannes Antonio Pena, 45, is accused of fondling himself and touching the girl inappropriately during a weekend sleepover at his home last fall.

Pena, who is free on $50,000 bond, declined to comment Tuesday at the Southwest Justice Center in French Valley.

The girl told investigators she was spending the night at her friend's Begonia Lane home Oct. 29 when Pena called her and his daughter over to look at a sex video he was watching on a laptop computer in the living room, according to an investigator's statement in support of a warrant to search Pena's home.

The 12-year-old told police Pena made sexual remarks and she walked away, stunned by what he had shown them, the statement says.

Pena told the girls he was going to bed and let the 12-year-old use his laptop "for educational purposes," the statement says, but instead he stayed up with the girls.

While the daughter slept nearby, the 12-year-old was sitting on the couch researching Megan's Law. The document does not say what prompted her to do so. The girl apparently asked Pena for help deciphering abbreviations on the Megan's Law website.

"Pena obliged and began discussing his sexual experiences when he was a young man," the statement says.

He began touching himself and the 12-year-old and kissing her arms, while making sexual comments, the statement says. The girl managed to escape the situation by telling Pena she heard a noise in the kitchen.

She told her mother what had happened days later.

Pena was arrested in December, court records show. He was charged earlier this month with lewd acts with a child under 14, distributing harmful matter to a child with the intent to seduce -- both felonies -- and misdemeanor annoying or molesting a child, court records show.

Tragically, these kinds of problems occur more frequently than anyone would like to imagine. It shows how important it is for parents to know their friends extremely well and to be careful who they allow their young girls (or boys) to visit alone. One's "friends" too often turn out to be one's enemy.

SANTA ANA, Calif. — Police say a Southern California man molested three young girls, the youngest only 5 years old.

Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna says investigators were called to a church in Orange after a 13-year-old girl told a counselor she had been molested by a family friend over the past three years during visits to the man's Santa Ana home.

The Orange County Register says her 8-year-old and 5-year-old sisters were also victims.

Officers arrested 48-year-old Gary Gruber and he was booked Thursday for investigation of lewd and sexual acts with a child under 14 and threats of retaliation.

Bertagna says Gruber met the girls' father about five years ago while they serving time in jail. They remained friends after release and Gruber was often called to baby sit the girls.
