Moderators John317 Posted February 19, 2011 Moderators Posted February 19, 2011 I wonder why. Next door to Haiti is the Dominican Republic, which has always been much better off. I think a lot of the success or failure of a nation or people depends, as it does with individuals, on its values and character. If they value hard work, self-discipline, honesty, education, etc., they will always do well. Haiti, however, has always had severe problems with all four of these and has been continually plagued with voodoo abd widespread corruption. I can remember some years ago, watching the depravity growing in the world, especially in America, wondering how long God was going to allow it to continue. Good habits can make the difference between prosperity and poverty. I'm of the opinion many countries look on a system of government as the key to abundance, therefore assuming America to be the gold standard. America's present position on the brink of disaster, reveals this as fallacy. "Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land."2 Chronicles 7:14 NLT "I will watch over and care for them, and I will bring them back here again. I will build them up and not tear them down. I will plant them and not uproot them." Jeremiah 24:6 NLT God Blesses! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
Moderators Bravus Posted February 19, 2011 Moderators Posted February 19, 2011 The fact that the French warred on Haiti for decades and charged them millions for their independence that killed their economy for more decades has nothing to do with Haiti's poverty, of course.... There is truth to that Bravus, but many Haitians I know and worked with all say that there government is to blame. The US has given them millions of dollars, but the people have not seen any of it. So I would say that the government should be held responsible. That's not saying that France didn't have a part in this. You can't legitimantly blame what is going on today in Haiti on what happened over 200 years ago. Look at the destruction and devastation that occurred in Germany two times in the world wars, but yet they didn't allow those things to keep them from getting ahead. Other nations have poured billions of dollars into Haiti and they could pour still more billions, as they almost certainly will, yet the situation and the problems remain fundamentally the same. A people must stop blaming others before they can ever learn from their mistakes and make progress. It is the same with individuals. As long as they blame others for their problems, and see themselves as victims, they will go on excusing themselves and never stop making the same mistakes. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. As long as they blame others for their problems, and see themselves as victims, they will go on excusing themselves and never stop making the same mistakes. Until one is willing to admit they have done anything wrong, they will be unwilling to repent and will go on justifying their untoward behavior. This may even bring some relief from present pain if enough sympathizers can be found. However there is no permanent future for those unwilling to accept the need for personal change. God blesses!
