Choosing a name for Baby...

Hi all,

Hope I've posted on the most appropriate section. We'll my wife is 20 weeks pregnant with our first child. Doc seems to think it's a boy...but we'll find out for sure in 2 weeks. I'm struggling with selecting the BEST name for a first born. I'm thinking: Joshua or Benjamin or Cyrus. I keep coming back to Cyrus the Great, the "anointed" of God.

Isa 45:1 Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut;

I know he's a "foreign" king...but we're all foreigners, right.

What are your thoughts about a boy named Cyrus? I just want a healthy baby, boy or girl, and we hope to HONOR GOD by selecting the right name.

Some things you might want to consider are how the first name sounds with your last name. Also, are you choosing a middle name. If so, you will want these three or four names to sound good together.

Also, make sure your wife really likes the names. And is it a name you are confident your child will like?

There are books of names you could consult because these not only give you many names to choose from but they will tell you the meaning of the names and some will also indicate how popular the name is.

Well, you are better at it than I am. The last time I had to come up with a boy's name, I chose two: Virgil or Wyatt.

The baby was a girl, thankfully!!

1. will many SDAs understand that Cyrus was a good king; thus a good name?

2. will others think: Miley or Billy Ray (Cyrus)?

3. will he be teased: Cyrus the Virus?

If the baby is a girl, my wife has other names and I'm cool with that. She wants me to have first dibs on a boys name.

I'm not much into mainstream, popular names. They come a dime a dozen. My birth name is Judah and I embrace and love it. It's an honorable name with great meaning.

And i keep coming back to a seldom given Biblical name of a foreign king who was good to the Children of Israel.

Maybe: Cyrus(first) James(middle) Amargo(last)

In my travels I found some very beautiful names among friends, former girlfriends and relatives, which are not common names in the USA, thus overlooked but still beautiful:

Hebrew:

Shlomit- Meaning Peace

Ronit

Elonit- I don't know wha these names mean I recognige the "El" in Elonit (put pronounced E-Lonit)

Norwegian:

Snefrid - Snowpeace (and the name in the Norwegian Translation of the story "Snow White and Rose Red")

Solvig - Sounds like it should be "Sunbeam" however in an American book of names I found it and it said it means "The Woman of the house" (i.e. the woman of the husband and wife team of the land owners)

Japan:

Kaori - again dont' know what it means but a very beutiful sounding name, as with the Thai names below

Thailand:

Pantiwa (can have teh nick name PanPan)

Saranya (pronounced Saran-ja)

I understand you wanting to choose a great name for your child. And also choosing one with a good "heritage" behind the name. Just realize that you and your wife are probably going to be the only ones that knows what the name means, unless you go around explaining it to people.

When we were picking names we felt that we needed to give our kids names that would express our Christian walk. But to others it just sounds like a name--does that make sense?

Just make sure the name is easy to read, pronounce, remember, and spell.

And please spell the name properly so your son doesn't have to correct people the rest of his natural born days.

Cyrus does sound good but how about Darius, Nebuchadnezzar for Kings that also did good for God. There were quite a number of Kings from Judah that did good for the Lord. :)

Believe it or not I saw a guy at WalMart the other day with the name Judas on his nametag. Isn't Judas the same as Judah?

Judah is Hebrew/Jewish origin

Judas is the Greek version.

Just like Yeshua or Joshua is Hebrew, while Jesus is the Greek version.

Judas is well known for betraying our Lord.

Judah is the son of Jacob, and the forefather or King David and KING JESUS.............. Oh yeah...!!!
