tribeofjudah Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 I've heard stories that in Ancient times, the High Priest would have a rope around his waist or ankle when he went into the Holy of Holies, that ONE time a year. Is it true or simply a legend??? There's nothing in the Bible that points to this: Quote: Dr. W.E. Nunnally, a professor of Hebrew and early Judaism, has reported: “The rope on the high priest legend is just that: a legend. It has obscure beginnings in the Middle Ages and keeps getting repeated. It cannot be found anywhere in the Bible, the Apocrypha, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Josephus, the Pseudepigrapha, the Talmud, Mishna, or any other Jewish source. It just is not there.” [2] The Biblical Studies http://christiananswers.net/q-eden/anklerope.html Quote

cricket Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Isn't it said that he wore a rope so that if he died in there the others could hear his bells stop ringing and pull him out? Quote
LifeHiscost Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Isn't it said that he wore a rope so that if he died in there the others could hear his bells stop ringing and pull him out? I've heard the same thing that seems to identify the early Jewish Priest's biggest lack, their uncertainty whether being close to the God Who is Love is really safe to be alone with. God blesses! cricket Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Wonder why God wanted them to wear bells in the first place? Quote
tribeofjudah Posted March 13, 2011 Author Posted March 13, 2011 The Bells are found in Exodus 39. The rope - seems like a myth and came about long after the Temple ceremonies ended. Joseph Good of Hatikvah Ministries, among others points out that the bells were attached to the robe of blue cloth (Exodus 39:22-24), worn under the ephod, whereas the priest wore only the linen tunic, sash, turban and undergarments to enter the Holy of Holies (Lev. 16:2-4), so he would not have been wearing the bells. (They were worn in the Holy Place, but not the most Holy Place). Quote
