Dottie Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I heard someone who has been underneath the main floors of some of the Tokyo skyscrapers say that they have been built with a very large spring system under them, That way they can sway without as much damage as if they were fixed to the ground. There are various systems that are used, as I understand it. But it is still disconcerting to see gigantic buildings swaying like a tree in the wind. There are various systems that are used, as I understand it. But it is still disconcerting to see gigantic buildings swaying like a tree in the wind. Yep, my BA is in Architecture. I remember a few things from my Monday 8:15am Structures class. Some incredible engineering goes into these buildings. To see them rocking like that is awe inspiring. Learned that in physics class many moons ago. The only personal experience I've had was while working at the LLU Medical Center up high in one of those towers during an earthquake. And those towers were built to sway and sway they did. GreatLakesGramma Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 I would imagine that if you were in them all the time, you'd get used to their normal swaying and not notice it anymore, like when sailors get their "sea legs." But I still wonder if it causes motion sickness in those like myself who are susceptible. Some computer adventure games make me very sick because of the way the graphics move in response to the mouse action. And nothing is moving then except what I'm seeing.
