Administrators Gail Posted March 16, 2011 Administrators Posted March 16, 2011 From Reuters: Homeschooling bigger than ever Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Moderators Gerr Posted March 16, 2011 Moderators Posted March 16, 2011 I know of at least 4 families in our church who homeschool their children. And I've read a few times that homeschooled children score higher in standardized tests. Quote
Liz Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Yeah for Home schooling!! I'm glad that it is no longer seen as such a bad thing. Hopefully it will continue in this trend. Every once in a great while I will hear negative comments about it. Quote For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? cricket Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 We too are fond of our homeschooling days. When we made the choice, we felt as if it were the only option we had left. After years of success, we know now that it is a choice we would have made sooner in the education of our children. Quote
Administrators Gail Posted March 16, 2011 Author Administrators Posted March 16, 2011 My kids did well with it, too. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Moderators Bravus Posted March 16, 2011 Moderators Posted March 16, 2011 Not going to be the one to say something negative about it - though I do think that, like any form of schooling (indeed, anything at all) it can be done well or badly - but I am curious. Does anyone have any stats about what proportion of homeschooled kids go on to university? Not that that's the only meaningful outcome, of course, but it'd be nice if they had the option. And anecdotally among my friends who have homeschooled the kids have largely ended up working in lower-level retail and service industries. Nothing wrong with that - unless it's because they don't have other options. Quote Truth is important

They all have degrees, 1 has a master's and another one is graduating this year with her master's, while the other one is on his second degree. 2 out of the 3 were asked by professors to pursue doctorates, but declined for personal reasons. :) Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Liz Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I don't think there are any stats like that Bravus, but ALL university's accept home schoolers even the Ivy League colleges. So being home schooled isn't going to handicap them in that respect (or any other). :) Quote For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? Moderators Bravus Posted March 16, 2011 Moderators Posted March 16, 2011 A few stats here - obviously picked from a particular perspective but still interesting: http://www.homeschool-living.com/homeschooling-statistics.html Quote Truth is important
Administrators Gail Posted March 16, 2011 Author Administrators Posted March 16, 2011 Interesting statistics. I do like the one that said that it didn't make a difference whether the parent was a certified teacher. Mothers ARE teachers right from the get-go (their child's birth), they are their child's first teacher. I spent quite a bit of time affirming mothers in their roles as mothers and educators while homeschooling. Liz Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Wow, did ya'll catch the fact that "None were unemployed and none were on welfare"? I wonder if that is really true? If so, how cool is that? Administrators Gail Posted March 16, 2011 Author Administrators Posted March 16, 2011 Wow, did ya'll catch the fact that "None were unemployed and none were on welfare"? I wonder if that is really true? If so, how cool is that? That is way cool! My kids have always been in demand for employment, which rocks majorly. Currently my daughter, who is finishing up her 2nd year of her master's, has 2 jobs grading papers for professors. Her grade average is over 4. Employers appreciate self-motivated, independently-thinking workers. I think that university faculty do, too. SivartM Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Hurrah for homeschool! :D Quote "Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much." - Oscar WildeDo to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets." - Jesus
cricket Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 As far as our state goes, homeschooling numbers aren't published because the state doesn't really get involved in the affairs of homeschoolers (unless a neighbor or relative perceives there is a problem and reports them to state officials). Regarding numbers in our household it's one for two--so far! My youngest is not yet ready for university. My eldest was ranked as one of our state's top 100 scholars (out of 60,000 students)the year she entered university. She's now attending a private university on scholarship to study actuarial science--carrying a 17.5 credit course load each of these first two semesters. She received perfect marks for her first semester and was invited to join the honors fraternity. There are 16 freshmen enrolled in the actuarial science program at her university. Of the 16, at least 4 were homeschooled. Quote
Administrators Gail Posted March 17, 2011 Author Administrators Posted March 17, 2011 Wow- awesome! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
CoAspen Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 My wife has a niece and nephew who were home schooled 1-8. Both have masters and one is working on their Phd is some field of physics. For 9-12 they attended an SDA Acadamy. Quote
Administrators Gail Posted March 17, 2011 Author Administrators Posted March 17, 2011 Very encouraging! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
