Administrators Gail Posted March 17, 2011 Administrators Posted March 17, 2011 I pinched one. I didn't even know about the pinch tradition until Liz mentioned it on FB. Then I asked around and yes, others know about it. So I joined in! My colleagues of Indian and Japanese descent are not wearing green. No big surprise there! It's all part of the fun :) Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Gail Posted March 17, 2011 Administrators Posted March 17, 2011 The women I talked to are more concerned about whether they look good in green or not! I wear green a lot, with the red hair and all. So what colour did I wear to work? ORANGE. But I added a scarf with green in it. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Liz Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 I know I actually lol'd when I found out, via my Canadian friends, that not everyone grew up being pinched if they weren't wearing green. I'm a pincher so I will certainly be on the look-out; I haven't gotten anyone yet though. :) Quote For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? cricket Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Why exactly do people pinch one another if they're not wearing green? I'm not Irish--not in the least--and have been pinched on occasion while growing up. I dreaded the day, personally, because of the pinching. Quote
Members phkrause Posted March 17, 2011 Members Posted March 17, 2011 I was always told that if you pinch someone they will grow an inch? Was I lied to? Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Members phkrause Posted March 17, 2011 Members Posted March 17, 2011 So you didn't get pinched enough than. :) Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Liz Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 I got pinched a lot and still didn't get very tall. I googled this, because I really didn't know that "we" were the only ones that did it. Apparantly, it started with Irish immigrants and the premise was that you got pinched for not wearing green, because on St. Patrick's day, Leprechauns would go about pinching those they could see. Leprechauns, I guess, can see any color but green. So people would wear green, thus, being invisible to the leprechauns. Getting pinched was a reminder to put on something green. But it really sounds like they were drinking a bit too much of their home brew, doesn't it? I also found out that the USA celebrates St. Patrick's bigger and more elaborate than Ireland does. There is a little town close to here, called Shamrock, and I know that they do go all out today. They have parades, pic-nics and green beer. :) Quote For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? cricket Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 Eh. I'll pass. I'll stick to my German-English-Scottish heritage! Quote

Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted March 18, 2011 Members Posted March 18, 2011 Eh. I'll pass. I prefer my English-German-Scottish heritage! I've got the same heritage as you, Cricket, except additional Eire thrown in.. Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
