Igakusei Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-12811197 Quote: A study using census data from nine countries shows that religion there is set for extinction, say researchers. The study found a steady rise in those claiming no religious affiliation. The team's mathematical model attempts to account for the interplay between the number of religious respondents and the social motives behind being one. The result, reported at the American Physical Society meeting in Dallas, US, indicates that religion will all but die out altogether in those countries. The team took census data stretching back as far as a century from countries in which the census queried religious affiliation: Australia, Austria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Switzerland. Nonlinear dynamics is invoked to explain a wide range of physical phenomena in which a number of factors play a part. It looks like, at least in these countries, the "King of the North" is winning! Since Adventists tend to have a very specific and somewhat detailed understanding of the political situation at the end of the world, what do you guys think is going to bring a bunch of completely secular nations under the arm of the Catholic Church? Moderators Bravus Posted March 24, 2011 Moderators Posted March 24, 2011 Here's a link to the actual paper: http://arxiv.org/pdf/1012.1375v2 Physicists are studying it because they have developed powerful mathematical modelling tools for use in physics, and are testing those tools against social phenomena as well. Moderators Bravus Posted March 24, 2011 Moderators Posted March 24, 2011 Figure 2 in that paper shows the exponential growth of the number of people reporting themselves unaffiliated with religion on national censuses. Quote Truth is important

Not sure about others, but for me the Bible has predicted this, and since almost all the prophecies have been fulfilled except a few, there's no reason to not believe that this one wont happen. It seems that this is exactly the thing that will bring this about. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. CoAspen Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Haven't read the article, but what is so wrong with not wanting to be associated with 'religion'! One needs to only look at what 'religion' has wrought upon the world. Perhaps many would rather be associated with the God/Christ of all those religions? Quote

Wrong conclusion. But how bout a worldwide revival of religion. It's happened before, why not again? Quote
Haldog Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 I think it is a good thing that people don't associate with a particular religion. What is the definition of religion? Man's attempt to get right with God. Jesus on the cross made us right with God. We will be better Christians if we do away with man-made organizations and just go with Jesus. Quote "You may not agree with everyone. But if you are an honest man, when someone says something you disagree with it’ll drive you to the Word. If you find out that you were wrong and change your thinking then you are the better for it. If you go to the Word and find out that you were right then you have been strengthened. But either way always go to the Word!!” Billye Brim
SivartM Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 What is the definition of religion? Man's attempt to get right with GodThat is not the definition of religion, but the made-up Christian definition of religion to try to make Christianity sound like it's not a religion because someone is trying to be cool and relevant and agree with non-religious people's criticisms and then go act just like religious people and identify as religious on census forms. Since Adventists tend to have a very specific and somewhat detailed understanding of the political situation at the end of the world, what do you guys think is going to bring a bunch of completely secular nations under the arm of the Catholic Church? The Bible says signs and wonders. Man might think that people will go completely secular, but there is a God-shaped space within people that the world cannot fill, although it does try. Nobody thought the Soviet Union could crumble, either, before it did. And now Islamic countries are protesting for democracy- who would have thought? My vote is with Bible prophecy. It's got at LEAST as good a chance as human predictions. I think a much better chance. :) Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
createsjg Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 We can but hope that all religion goes extinct. Christianity is a relationship and there won't be any religion in Heaven only adoration, worship and communion with God Himself. Our first job is to take the Gospel to the world in love and not make them SDA. Jesus has sheep in other folds. Quote

I'm talking about the cliché that "Christianity is not a religion" because it doesn't fit this definition of religion which I made up to not include Christianity because nobody likes religion anymore so I'll just rebrand my religion while still clearly subscribing to a religion, and then everyone will suddenly become a Christian because it's not a religion anymore. So I'm not talking about Christians who don't act like Christians, I'm talking about Christians who act like Christians but pretend that they're not religious. And then go off and rant about why their religion is right, etc. Quote "Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much." - Oscar WildeDo to others whatever you would like them to do to you. Moderators Gerr Posted March 25, 2011 Moderators Posted March 25, 2011 Just tagging on. Religion - 4 : a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith Merriam-Webster, I. (2003). Merriam-Webster's collegiate dictionary. (Eleventh ed.). Springfield, Mass.: Merriam-Webster, Inc. By this definition it is alive and well, since evolution and atheism is is just as much ardor and faith as theism. Quote
SivartM Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 "Atheism/Humansim is not a religion... It is a personal relationship with reality." Note: that quote is not from me. skyblue888 Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 The true religion, the only religion of the Bible is this: There is salvation for you but only through the merits of Jesus Christ. This is the foundation of the Christian's faith. But the foundation of all the religions of the world is man's attempt to get right with God through the merits of his own "good" works. It is true that the world is becoming more secular but that will change. Soon the whole world will worship the beast and his image. There will be a false revival that will take the whole world captive. But there will also be a revival of primitive faith and godliness and men will be captivated by the glory of an abiding Christ and from the many souls thus won to God, glory will flow back to the great Giver. sky Quote "The merits of His sacrifice are sufficient to present to the Father in our behalf." S.C.36.
doug yowell Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 "Atheism/Humansim is not a religion... It is a personal relationship with reality." Yes,much like the personal relationship Brutus had with Ceasar. Quote
fccool Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 Who's Brutus and who's Caesar in that analogy? Religion will not die. It will exist as long as humanity does. There will always be plenty of unexplained things for religion to fill the gaps. There's a great diversion away from fundamentalism in religious movements, but it does not mean that religion overall dying off. It just changes hands, and shape. If you look at Christianity historically, what we have today ... hardly resembles what Christianity was mere 100 years ago. It's a lot less dogmatic, and more of a pragmatic shift. Quote
