When I was my most depressed, blackest hole, I would pray in my solitude and God would send me praise. It was a spirit of praise. That was how I had assurance that God would see me through. There is a kind of closeness to God that we cannot have any other way; not that God is different, but it is then that we are the weakest and least inclined to be able to pull ourselves out. And the blackness just makes God's glory shine the brighter. But that is hard to discern when one is right IN his own personal "slough of despair". Night times of this nature are often instructive in retrospect but should never be sought out for their pedagogical qualities. So no, Mrs. Gray does not believe in a "guiding night." However I do not believe it is the pain, or the dark night, that actually causes us to grow. Rather it is what we do when we have that pain. People are seldom open to change when everything is good but when they feel pain they are more willing to re-evaluate life. That pain may be the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, a divorce, an illness, war, material loss to natural disaster or simply the loss of a friendship. Man's tragedy, is often God's opportunity. So if the person chooses to look to God with a willing heart to follow Him, a dark night can cause a change in the person's life for the better. Moderators LynnDel Posted April 3, 2011 Moderators Posted April 3, 2011 Sometimes it takes the darkness and quietness of night, free from distraction, to help us focus on where God has led us, and to let us put together the puzzle pieces of our life so that we know what God has prepared for our future and therefore what direction we should take.
