Beware the Bath Salt

My son's Civics teacher recently gave him an assignment to e-mail our senator regarding one of several proposed bills. Among a list of other bills, one is in regards to banning bath salts. I thought that was a rather odd bill, but today I read this, and thought that some of you parents of teens might also be interested in knowing the latest trends:

Sold under such names as Ivory Wave, Bliss, White Lightning and Hurricane Charlie, the chemicals can cause hallucinations, paranoia, rapid heart rates and suicidal thoughts, authorities say. The chemicals are in products sold legally at convenience stores and on the Internet as bath salts and even plant foods. However, they aren't necessarily being used for the purposes on the label.

Mississippi lawmakers this week began considering a proposal to ban the sale of the powders, and a similar step is being sought in Kentucky. In Louisiana, the bath salts were outlawed by an emergency order after the state's poison center received more than 125 calls in the last three months of 2010 involving exposure to the chemicals.

In Brown's case, he said he had tried every drug from heroin to crack and was so shaken by terrifying hallucinations that he wrote one Mississippi paper urging people to stay away from the advertised bath salts.

Well, what will they think of next?

I know!! It never ceases to amaze me what people will try and do to get high. However, I'm not sure banning the items is really the way to go. I mean, people will then just move on to something else--where and when would the banning stop? I think, we need to make it illegal to sue the company if people gets hurt using the product in a way it was never intended to be used.

Just my thoughts.

Here in Australia, drug users desperate for a "hit" have been known to inject themselves with watered-down Vegemite. That is really nasty, and causes some horrible consequences like limb gangrene and fungal (yeast) septicemia.

But I would love to see the authorities try to ban Vegemite. There would be riots in the streets.

Whatever happened to rubbing alcohol, like in the olden days?

Rubbing alcohol is very toxic;, I think that there is something added to it but am not sure. The high would end in death. Wood alcohol is also toxic. Ethyl alcohol is the alcohol produced in fermentation of fruits and grains. (a non-expert thought)
