are whites allowed to attend Oakwood College?

Of course they are. A friend of mine, quite white, graduated from Oakwood and is serving as a pastor here in Maryland.

"Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good."

"Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal."

"I love God only as much as the person I love the least."

Someone is watching the Hope Channel :)

Sometimes they seem so Anglican.... has anyone else ever thought that?

Yep. And I was wondering if they allowed whites or not because I could not find one white person in their large choir. Now I am wondering if they are racists there and don't allow whites in their choir. Or do they just think that whites don't know how to sing properly?

The other thing Stan. While listening to Ted speak ... I can't recall seeing someone read so much of a sermon than he does. Of course I suppose when someone includes SO much Ellen White ... that one would have to read because how could you have so much of her memorized? I suppose if ANYone could have her memorized ... HE could. :)

I do have to say it is disappointing to have SO much EGW read. Does he know that this is being broadcast to the WORLD. ANd our prophet had something to say about her words being given to non-SDAs.

But the bottom line is that it is really disturbing to me to have ANYone have a sermon where the majority of the sermon is reading EGW quotes. But when our president does it ... it is particularly disturbing.

Edit: Later ... After listening to Ted's sermon. I am willing to state clearly that 75% of Ted's sermon was read. And the majority of what was read was Ellen White. Can ANYone refute this? I think it was shameful. Just my two cents worth.

I think it's refreshing to see a leader lean so heavily on the spirit of prophecy. It's set a good example for the members and is boldly proclaiming one of the most important tenants of our faith, to members and to the world.

Reading ANYthing for 75% of the time in a sermon is never refreshing. They do not teach pastors in the Seminary to do this. They are taught just the opposite.

My nephew got a scholarship to go to Oakwood. He only went one year though, than went to Walla Walla and graduated. I also believe he met his future wife at Oakwood!

Would you rather they quote someone else all the time? I agree with Club, and for me it shows that we except her as a prophet, so others can see that we except what she has to say. And I have notice that when they do quote her its mainly to show how accurate the Bible is. She's never used to prove that the Bible is wrong, like other churches do to show that there prophet disagrees with the Bible.

I would prefer that during a sermon ... not more than 10-20% of the time be spent in reading ANYthing. The point is that it was a poor sermon when he read for 75% of the sermon.

I prefer eye contact. And when someone is reading ... there is no eye contact. And you quickly lose the attention of your congregation.

No churches use their own prophet to prove that the Bible is wrong. Our church has declared that Ellen White never goes contrary to scripture. So, any interpretation that might do that is declared to be Anathama.

We should start a fund to buy him a teleprompter! Ha Ha

Serioulsy, I've always been a little confused about all the fuss made over Obama using a teleprompter, I think it's smart. A well known and important leader, like the POTUS or in our case Mr. Wilson, is a target for critiquing every word they utter. How they utter it, the context in which it was uttered. The facial expressions, the hand gestures, no stone is left unturned in the search for "hidden messages". What's he REALLY saying? Pundits, radicals, left and right have a field day with such observations. The slightest gaff is instant fodder for the news, the web, the world.

I'm amazed more leaders don't use a bullet proof script where every word is carefully chosen. Teleprompter for me, Obama is onto something, Ted, check it out! :)

Use of a teleprompter allows for a more personal delivery, that all important "eye contact" as Woody points out. Sure, I prefer a speech, sermon or whatever, to be a bit more personal. But, the higher in office you go the more difficult that becomes. Especially in our day and age of "instant news".

As Paul Harvey used to say, "Page two". Paul was onto something!

They might not come right out and say it that way, but its implied when some say we have changed this and that. Or when ones prophet has rewritten the Bible to show the errors! No I agree it might not be said but its definitely implied.

No. I think Ted is beyond hope. That is unless we could convince him to visit Tom's Original Thoughts Forum and 'Tutor under Tom's Tutelage' for a few days. :)

Catholics and Mormons instantly come to mind where it concerns a false prophet changing or disputing certain bible texts.

The Pope claims the power to do this, Sunday keeping being the supreme example. The Mormons consider the word's of their prophet over and above the bible.

Those who would suggest Ellen White is in less than full harmony with the bible will eventually find themselves in an anathama situation.

Before any one person comes to that "fork in the road", the slippery slope, so well traveled by to many SDA's, there will be a mixture of truth and error on this point. James White himself fell victim to the slippery slope at least once. Claiming her reproof of him was merely her "personal opinion", before seeing the light.

While she did indeed have a personal opinion from time to time, suggesting that is the case for any given quote places you precairiously on the edge of that slippery slope. Go there with caution.

Back to the point ...

We don't need a sermon where someone just gets up and reads Ellen White quotes. No pastor could graduate from the seminary if he did that. So, I would expect better from the President of the GC . (just sayin')

Just trying to find that balance Woody. I do enjoy a good dose of EGW quotes in a sermon to enlighten the principal message, or give more clairity to a bible passage. But thats just me, I understand the potential for controversy in that regard...

EGW quotes are fine in balance. I will give you that. Most people here would probably say I quote EGW too much. But then I am not standing up in front of the world READING them.

Don't get me wrong. I would say the same thing if TED was reading the Bible during 75% of this sermon.

And don't get me wrong ... I enjoy a good dose of scripture during a sermon.

Exactly, not sure how many times I've heard someone say, I wish the Bible would say more on that subject. So now we have someone who can and we don't want to hear it.

Yes, he passed up a good opportunity to read scriptures instead of EGW. I would have been at least 50% happier if he had done that kind of readings. But still not happy.
