tribeofjudah Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 Have you seen the book titled "god is not Great"....? It's just another avenue that the adversary has taken to derail humans in their LOVE and quest for meaning in God. There are many rave reviews about this book. I don't know the life Author Hitchens but I find his book contrary to my beliefs. No, I have NOT read the book nor do I desire to read it. I've got plenty of books to uplift my spirit to Jesus and God. Here is comment from Christian believer: "Hitchens view of reality is distorted by his hatred." by: Member id goldroca ( Feedback Score Of 452 ) Hitchens view of reality is distorted by his hatred of all religions, especially Christianity. Apparently, he cannot distinguish between evil people that use religion for their own gain (e.g., the Spanish Inquisitors) and true Christians who genuinely love their neighbors as themselves. The intolerance displayed by Hitchens is frightening because it is comparable to that of Mao, Stalin and Pol Pot who murdered over 100 million people in the last century in an effort to advance their atheistic worldview. Igakusei Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 I've read it, and I both agree and disagree. His hatred of religion in large part seems to have been fashioned by his own highly negative experiences with it. The reviewer is wrong though, as he is explicitly not attacking religious people (primarily monotheists) themselves, but their beliefs and the potential consequences of those beliefs. It's no secret that religion has done wonderful things for many, many people, but his book largely focuses on the horrible things done in the name of religion with the implied question "is it worth the cost?" As a side note, Mao, Stalin, and Pol Pot were all politically motivated, not atheistically. It's no more of a cogent argument than saying Hitler was Catholic. Quote I believe in life before death
Administrators Gail Posted April 16, 2011 Administrators Posted April 16, 2011 Ironically, Christopher Hitchens has a brother, Peter, who is a Christian believer. I started watching a video dialogue between the two and there is a mutual respect even though they are poles apart in philosophy. I don't buy into Hitchens' views but I do admire his respectful words towards those who don't agree with him (from what I have watched of him in interviews). It seems that he gets treated way lot worse than he dishes out by way of personal attacks. Such attacks from Christians cannot be winning to a heart bent on disagreement. In fact, they may establish his mindset. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

SivartM Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 At least he has a better idea of how people ought to think of God than a lot of religious people do. D.A. Wintsmith Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 I have a problem with a book being declared "A Bothersome Book" by someone who hasn't read it. I am not saying that you should read it -- just that unless you know what is in the book, you can't be sure that what other people are saying about it is correct. Quote
tribeofjudah Posted May 17, 2011 Author Posted May 17, 2011 still....no thanks. I have many uplifting books to read about Christ and his love. I doubt this falls in that category. But go ahead....break a leg. Quote
