I've always believed an employer should have the right to hire those that are willing to do the work they are hired to do.

I have no problem with this. The government is not required to become SDA.

May we be one so that the world may be won.

Well, I've never lived in an area that offered Sunday delivery. And while I've never dropped anything off on Sabbath we do receive our mail. I wouldn't mind if the P.O. stopped weekend deliveries altogether. I mean, if you get something in the mail that needs attention, you have to wait until Monday morning for regular business hours anyways.

I've never lived in a place that offered Sunday delivery either, but I wish they would! :) I'd like to get mail 7 days a week--so long as it's not a bill! Even then, if it were a bill, I'd have at least one "extra" day to get the payment back to the company--provided that pickup of mail is also 7 days a week.

Anyway, I really don't have a problem with the Post Office switching to Saturdays. Like Woody said, "I've always believed an employer should have the right to hire those that are willing to do the work they are hired to do."

I definitely agree with you Woody. After I got laid off in Feb '08, I applied to the PO. Took all the tests, etc. I got my first interview and would you believe, Sabbath is the day they wanted me to work. Someone I know told me not to say anything, that I was an SDA, till after they hired me and than tell them I couldn't work on Sabbath. I couldn't do that! So as the guy ws telling me what they needed me for, I stopped him and told him that I was an SDA, I keep the Bible Sabbath. I was than told by someone that I should take them to court. I thought that was not appropriate, because I already knew that they worked on Sabbath. I suppose if I lived in the LL area I'd probably would of been hired to work on Sunday.

Me neither, really seems strange. I know up in Mass, the neighborhood we lived in, Lancaster, catered to the many SDAs in the area. But never getting our mail on Sundays. I think the PO has been thinking about ending Saturday mail all together.

"8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in March that Adventist carriers may be fired for refusing to work on Saturdays."

kinda reminded me of a verse in Rev. 13:15;

"And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed".

It makes me sad to think that our federal government is basically forcing us to choose our conscience or a paycheck.

I almost think that our government is more corporate than constitutional, therefore Rev. 13:15 seemed applicable.

Groan............ GAH, you do have a choice, no forceing at all. The government is not a religious organization, deal with it!!

then why is it acting like one? Saturday work, Sunday sacred?

looks like it's heading in a direction.

It's not heading anywhere; it's exactly where it's been for years: mail is delivered on Saturday, not Sunday. Nobody is being persecuted.

They should just stop mail delivery on the weekend altogether. The quantity of mail has dropped dramatically with the invention of the internet. Weekend delivery really isn't needed anymore and it would save the post office money.

In Ontario they don't deliver any mail Weekends or holidays, ever since it went to private owners.

Weekend delivery is needed in our household. So, I guess you're just saying it's not needed for your household.

I really do think mail on Saturday and Sundays as well as the other five days a week would be ideal!

Years ago our nation was agriculturally based and many folks only came to town on Sunday to go to church. The post office needed to be open so they could pick up their mail. That is not the case today.

There has been a lot of discussion recently about stopping Saturday delivery because the quantity of mail has dropped so much. No one needs Saturday delivery. If you have a mailbox, the carrier will leave the letters there. If you need to rent a post office box, the post office lobby is open on the weekend and you can pick your mail up there. If your concern is package delivery, you can have packages delivered to a place like "Mailboxes Etc." and can pick them up there on the weekend. There is no need for the Post Office to lose money delivering mail on Saturday.

I'm old enough to remember when the postman always came twice every day -- once in the morning and once in the afternoon.

We need mail delivery on Saturdays; there are others who also need mail delivery on Saturdays--particularly the elderly and disabled. It would be better if we had mail delivery all seven days.

Just curious... Why?

What can only come by USPS and has to be delivered every day that the elderly and disabled must have? I am a bit puzzled.

If by "dramatically" you mean a few billion pieces of mail. Mail volume actually increased dramatically in the middle of the decade, and while it's lower now, there were still 171 billion pieces processed last year.

I guess you've never sat at home on a Sunday, wishing for Sunday delivery because you are waiting for heart medication to arrive because Saturday your three-month supply ran out and the local pharmacy won't refill your order because you already re-ordered the next three-month supply and their records indicate you should have received it by now and you can't get ahold of your doctor until Monday to give you a limited supply to tie you over until your mail-order arrives; all the while your stress levels increase and your heart races and your blood pressure increases?

Anyway. Who cares?

Hey Cricket, we get our medical supplies from UPS or maybe FedEX, either way the regular mail people doesn't bring it. Also I don't know who y'all use, but Fifty/50 is a great place to get your meds from, a bunch of people in my other online community use them, and have never had a problem, and I think you can even order online once you get it started. It is fifty50.com

Anywho, just trying to be helpful.

Thanks, Liz. It's not me, personally--I like to drive to the local pharmacy and pick mine up. But, there have been members of my family for whom this happens, because they insist on using the cheapest methods available to them--being on government funded health plans, using only certain "approved" doctors, generic drugs, least expensive shipping and handling, mail-order (not Internet--can't afford it) and the like. It's people like that who need service available to them--people who don't really have another choice.

Yes, I get my prescription medicine by mail too. The resupply order comes weeks ahead of time and if ordered timely it usually is delivered while I have several weeks supply left. While I recognize some seniors may be forgetful, ( My Dad gets his mail on schedule, puts it in a draw and forgets about it...) I am afraid the problem you speak of wouldn't be solved by delivery of mail 7 days a week, three times a day. If the order is placed too late it won't be delivered on time, no matter the delivery system. And usually a pharmacy can issue a few days supply of critical drugs in the scenario you describe. Been there, done that...

Here is how I would balance the USPS budget. I think residential mail delivery every other day would be sufficient. They could deliver Monday, Wednesday and Friday. For business, 5 days a week would be more than enough. They can still do special delivery on weekends as they do now. At least 95% of my business communication is electronic. Documents are increasingly signed even electronically. Most of the USPS mail I get both at home and at work is junk mail, almost all the rest bills or magazines. I have 30 days to read the magazines, pay the bills and 30 seconds to drop the junk mail directly into the recycling on the way into the house from the mailbox. I send out very little mail, outbound mail no more than 2 or 3 days a week on average at work and maybe 4 or 5 days a month from home. And junk mail shouldn't get lower bulk mail postal rates, it should pay higher rates. (Maybe it would reduce the junk mail and consequently recycled paper. The recycling truck would only need to pick up paper every other week or maybe even only once a month.)

Dear Tom,

You're right.

I'm wrong.

actually it was i believe the 102nd congress that was debating a "national sunday law" in which the stoppage of postal service on sunday was enacted. but i am sure you knew this.

in regard to a government being empowered to fire someone over a religious conviction, regardless of the faith, it (the government) is in itself a "type" or "image" of a beast power (religion). but i am sure you understand this as well.
