Moderators Bravus Posted April 24, 2011 Moderators Posted April 24, 2011 I use 'em (and small but unfamiliar words too), when I do, because they are the best available word for the job. (le mot juste, heh) I regard it as treating my readers with respect - I assume that they either know the words or have the wherewithal to look them up{1}. It's not an attempt to show off my vocabulary. And it's *certainly* not an attempt to belittle anyone: as I said above, it's more of a compliment. By not 'dumbing down' what I say, I show that I don't consider my readers to be dumb. {1} And given that this is an internet forum and there's a plethora (heh) of online dictionaries, that's not a large assumption to make. Edit: And this is my palindromic (heh) post number 12321. Quote Truth is important
Woody Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Can U please define for me what you mean by "big words". Does that mean the capitalized ones or the longest ones? Can you please be a little more specific? Big words would be allowed if you want for your definition. It sure would be big of you to do this. Thanking you in advance. Woody Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Words Ahhh. Now I get the picture. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Amelia Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 I too use big and little words. Mostly due to my crossword puzzles. I grew up with words. Both my mother and father were puzzlers and used those words in everyday vocab. But at work, everyone calls me a "knowitall" because of my word use. I've also been called the walking thesaurus. It doesn't make me an intellengent person; just one who likes words. It's all copacetic.
