Stan Posted May 5, 2011 Author Posted May 5, 2011 often a discussion is done by those who agree with me, and a debate is what those who do not agree with me.... YET debates KILL FORUMS... skyblue888 Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 By "debates" you mean "contentions"? Quote "The merits of His sacrifice are sufficient to present to the Father in our behalf." S.C.36.
Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted May 5, 2011 Administrators Posted May 5, 2011 For some reason a debate on an internet forum almost always is or eventually becomes contentious. In the 3-D world if every conversation with someone always turned into an argument it would not be long before you would simply avoid all conversation with that person and likely avoid being near that person. So it is with forum "debaters"... People leave, discussions cease, and forums die. Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth. (And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)
skyblue888 Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 Does not the Word of God support contentions over words and ideas with a purpose, that is, to the subverting of the hearers? "Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers." 2 Tim.2:14. The key words are "to no profit" as the following commentary will show: 2 Tim.2:14--CONTENTIONS WITH A PURPOSE--"What does that mean? It means that there may be contentions over words and ideas, but they should be to a purpose, they should be to break down the stubbornness and the opposition that is in human hearts in order that their spirits may be softened and subdued, so that when the seeds of truth are dropped into the soil of the heart, they may take root there." E.G. White, MS 13,1888. So there is such a thing as contentions over words and ideas on forums such as we have here on clubadventist but they should be to a purpose and that purpose, as described in the above statement, is a noble one. sky Quote "The merits of His sacrifice are sufficient to present to the Father in our behalf." S.C.36.
Flyboy Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 I think debate is good, otherwise how would new ideas take shape? If there was no debate there would never have been a Protestant Reformation or an SDA church. That said, I think it's important to keep in mind that the *purpose* of debate in a forum like this should be to 1) stimulate thinking and 2) to discover truth. If it is done in this spirit, rather than simply debating to prove one's point, then it can be done in a very civil manner. They key is to have an open mind, not a closed mind. Quote
Moderators Bravus Posted May 9, 2011 Moderators Posted May 9, 2011 'Debate' should involve evidence and logic, not just slanging. Debate would be a step up from what we actually get. But yeah, a conversation, a discussion, is what we're mostly here for, and sadly seems harder to come by these days. Quote Truth is important

Flyboy Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 Based on that definition, I can agree that debate would be a discussion killer. Quote
