Administrators Gail Posted May 11, 2011 Administrators Posted May 11, 2011 What is the heart, as the Bible means it? It's easy to say, "It's the mind, because that is where thoughts and emotions have their origin." But- I don't know... I think there is more to it than that. The mind can certainly form a person's viewpoints, but it can also get stuck in the intellectual. A person can know theology but not be converted. I think that is where the heart comes in. What I read in the Bible concerning "heart," seems deeper than just the mind. With the mind one can make a mental assertion. I think that the will has to do with the mind, too. But the heart is where Christ through the Spirit dwells; it is where the change takes place. Thoughts? I would love to explore some Scripture on this if anyone is willing. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Thoughts? I would love to explore some Scripture on this if anyone is willing. I don't know exactly how to express what the "heart" is but I'll give it a shot. Jesus said,(paraphrasing Him) out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man brings out good things, and an evil man brings forth evil, out what of what they treasure. So, I see this concept of the "heart" as being a combination of our mind, our emotions, our conscience, etc.... It is "who" we are. Our mind can't "treasure" something. Our conscience can't treasure something. Our emotions can't treasure something. Only we, as persons, can treasure something so the heart has to be who we are, our very essence as individuals. Specualtion? Yup. But it makes sense to me. No single part of us makes all decisions, such as what we want to treasure. That comes from the very essence of who we are. Mind, emotions, conscience all play a part in deciding what we choose to treasure, but each plays an incomplete part. Only the entire sum of who we are makes those choices. Quote
Ron Amnsn Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 Ruth Beechick (not an SDA) has written a book that examines the evidence in the Bible regarding the heart and correlates it with what has been discovered in science The book is titled Heart & Mind: What the Bible Says About Learning. It is available at many online bookstores. Quote
Woody Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 Quote: What is the heart, as the Bible means it? Perhaps some of the longest threads alive have dealt with this topic. There is one person for sure you don't want to get started on this topic. Anyone recall Twilight? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Moderators Kevin H Posted May 15, 2011 Moderators Posted May 15, 2011 There are studies that suggest that the heart may play more of a role in the body than just a pump. Now some of what I read I don't like and would stop reading as it would start to be too new agie, but others gave some good points to think about. The heart has the second most concentration of nerve cells in the body (next to the brain) and emotions and good or bad memories play a large role on heart health, and while there is not enought to be convincing there is enought evidence to be considered, occasionally heart transplant patients take on a few characteristics or even occasional memories of the doners such as using words that were very common for the doner, such as someone started using the word "Copostetic" a lot and the doner used to use that word a lot, another would occasionally have nightmares of a car accident, when meeting the widow of the heart doner, he told her about the nightmares and they were the exact details of the car accident that the doner and his wife were in, the wife survived. Interestingly, at church yesterday my friend mentioned a Nova program that she saw that echoed what you have said here. She said that there has found evidence of a secondary "brain" within the heart. That was how she worded it. How curious! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Gail Posted May 15, 2011 Author Administrators Posted May 15, 2011 I think this would make a fascinating study Even though we are limited by what we don't know concerning the heart, I think it would be interesting, especially if science discoveries match what the Bible says. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Administrators Gail Posted May 15, 2011 Author Administrators Posted May 15, 2011 I was in a discussion about this, how when one is overloaded with information one gets a headache or confused or just needs a break from thinking. When one suffers a relationship breakup, one is "heartbroken". Why? Because the emotion seems to really come from the heart, doesn't it? One might need to clear one's head, tis true, but another word that comes to mind is "heartache". Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Gail Posted May 17, 2011 Author Administrators Posted May 17, 2011 Just heard this: "Personality is not character" Thoughts? Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Raphael Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 Very fascinating fact about the heart. Is there a referential web link to this information? Quote Test me with thy might but grant me safe passage. Now, who said that?
Guest Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 No, personality is not character. You can have a great personality, and still be the most evil, conniving person on the planet. Quote
Administrators Gail Posted May 28, 2011 Author Administrators Posted May 28, 2011 Yes- character is what a person develops by the habits s/he makes for oneself Each act is a choice, no? Many choices develop habits. Habits, over time, form the character. One sin doesn't make a character, as one good work doesn't, either. It is the whole altogether that form the character. Trials will expose a character, whether it is one based on faith and courage, or whether it will fall to pieces during times of stress. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
