Woody Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 In regard of issues like meat eating, slavery, poligamy, sexual abuse, misogyny and divorce - Why does God allow sin for thousands of years instead of simply telling them the TRUTH? Is there a lesson here for us? Should we be preaching forgiveness rather than obedience? Is "truth" over-rated? Is perhaps God not so particular about sin as many have suggested? He appears to over look so many evils and even condones it in the issue of slavery, divorce and meat eating. Just askin' :) Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. CoAspen Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 You ain't jus' askin!!! Yep, our truth is over rated! To quote a favorite line...(We) can't handle the truth!! Quote

Haldog Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Sin was dealt with at the cross by Jesus Christ. The Lamb of God took away the sins of the world. It no longer stands between us and God. Now the only sin is unbelief. Quote "You may not agree with everyone. But if you are an honest man, when someone says something you disagree with it’ll drive you to the Word. If you find out that you were wrong and change your thinking then you are the better for it. If you go to the Word and find out that you were right then you have been strengthened. But either way always go to the Word!!” Billye Brim
Dr. Rich Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 WHAT? Haldog, are you suggesting that there is no longer any sin in this world? Are you locked up somewhere without any source of comunication? Jesus only paid the penalty for those who become righteous by overcoming sin ON THEIR OWN. Just as God told Cain, "YOU must overcome....." Those who have been deceived by false apostles who came after Jesus sowed the truth in the NT and later sowed their lies, will some day be suddenly surprised when Jesus tells them He never knew them. Jesus said the reason He came here to this earth was to testify to the truth. It is truth that when practiced, causes one to become righteous. Rev. 21:8 and 22:15 prove that knowing the truth and practicing the truth is all important. Anything less is believing a lie and you can read the warning Jesus gave us about what will happen to ALL who believe and practice a lie. Quote
Flyboy Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 Was this the point that Jesus was making (that we overstate law and understate love) when he said to love God with all your heart and your neighbor as yourself, in response to being questioned on which was the most important commandment? I often think Jesus is up there smacking himself in the head, going "doh!", when we humans down here constantly spend our time blindly leading or blindly arguing about things when really we should be practicing love. That is what God was about after all. I see a great contrast between the OT and NT and have often wondered what the reasons are. Have had pastors give sermons on it and they pull one of the 'ole "they strengthen each other" arguments, which, I can see how someone would make that argument, but I don't agree with it. Trouble is, I'm not sure how to explain it myself. The OT seems to be focused on law, the NT on love. What gives? Truth/law, or love? Quote
wayfinder Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 Exodus 20:6 NAS but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. John 14:15 NAS "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. John 14:21 NAS "He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him." John 15:10 NAS "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love ; just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love. Love for God and neighbor is fulfilled and demonstrated by keeping the commandments. Commandment keeping must be the result of our love for God and neighbor, anything else is legalizm. Quote
Dr. Rich Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 Love for our neighbors is warning them of the impending judgment and the real truth as Jesus said and taught which was given to us by His eyewitnesses. It's their choice to 'drink or not to drink'. Quote
Flyboy Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 I'm not suggesting that the OT and NT don't have any points of agreement, far from it. It is easy to find points of agreement between them, as it is between the Bible, Confucius, Mohammed, Dao-tse, and many other moral thinkers. My comment is to the general overall feel of the OT and NT. They feel different. OT is full of retribution, NT is full of love. Aside from the obvious, what happened at the cross that would have changed the way people think of God? Is it possible that God, seeing how people were misrepresenting His word, gave Jesus a message that was full of love, rather than war and death? Quote
Dr. Rich Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 Flyboy, try this: Read the words of Jesus given to us by Matthew, Mark and John and then compare them with what is said and taught in the OT. Let us know what you find as I think you will find them about the same and that God did not ever change anything except to remove Israel from being His Kingdom as found in Matthew 21:43 because their time expired as found in Dan. 9:24.
