It is a sad tale but not too hard to understand. Affairs like this happen all the time. What can we learn from it? Communication is most important in a marriage. We are most likely to have affairs with those we work with or interact with on a regular basis.

We certainly don't know enough to make any judgement calls in this case. However, in general, we know that men need to feel like they are their wife's super hero. They need their wives to respect them. When the wife neglects to do these things and another woman comes along who does... the man is going to have to resist the desire to become sexual with the one who is feeding him emotionally. Notice the woman that Arnold had this affair with is not some gorgeous, hard-body model type. She is 50 years old and looks her age. He wasn't out chasing short skirts, he fell for a woman that he interacted with on a daily basis.

One thing I do is that I tell on myself. If I find a particular woman attractive or a woman is flattering my ego, I tell a Christian friend I trust about what is going on. If my wife isn't giving me the attention I feel I deserve and I am feeling deprived, I tell a Christian friend I trust what is going on. Secrets tend to get a lot of people in trouble so I try to let someone else know what is going on in my head.

Why do I need to forgive Arnold?He hasn't done anything to me,his actions do not impact my life or those around me.

What should I forgive his wife for?

His girlfriend,her actions speak for themselves but at the same time I wouldn't know her if I met her on the street.

I should have considered the readership of this and been more specific, and included other comments like

BECAUSE he was up front with this, made the announcement etc etc, how many days would it be in the headlines 1? 2 ? more??? When he made it public and did not deny it, it soon becomes yesterdays news. If he would have taken another route it would be front page for weeks, or close to it, as investigative reporters did more research.

There remains 2 kinds of sinners, those who have been caught and those who have not been.

It is not about his affair, or how long or short it was, it was more about how the media & playboy will handle it. Sorry I was not more plain.

I'm not familiar with Playboy's contracts. But I suppose there are some who would be interested in seeing her photo...and/or watching some sordid movie...

I think they got Monica Lewinsky, and they will often exploit for a few millions dollars other folks like that.

This probably will clear the news cycle quickly since he is out of politics now and this kind of thing is pretty common in Hollywood. Being up front does take the wind out of the sails.

My neighbor's daughter got pregnant when she was 17 years old. I didn't think much of that because it happens all the time. A couple of years later she married the father and I thought that was nice because teenage mothers often don't marry the father of their children. My neighbor later told me how he found out his daughter was pregnant. Her 17 year old boyfriend called him and told him he had gotten his daughter pregnant. When the girl got pregnant she told her boyfriend and didn't know how she was going to tell her parents so the boyfriend told her that he would. I thought a lot about that. I think it is quite admirable for a 17 year old boy to call his girlfriend's dad and tell him he got his daughter pregnant. Off subject a bit but Arnold being upfront reminded me of that.

Yep, I agree about the concept of money-making from _________________________________ (fill in the blank with whatever attracts the rubbernecks). If there was no demand the "15 minutes of fame" idea wouldn't make people rich.

I'm tired of hearing the news outlets asking if "he should be forgiven" to his church members. When someone in the church has to question if someone needs to be forgiven that's a bit disturbing. I believe everyone should be forgiven, but forgiven does not mean you don't have to pay consequences for your sins.

Since he hasn't done anything to me, I have nothing to forgive him for. Maybe if someone set him up as a role model for their children, they may feel they have been wronged. I wouldn't be that superficial to set a celebrity up as a role model for my children.

We don't know enough details to really make a judgment call about Arnold's private life. Although his failure can cause us to think about ways we can keep from falling into similar sin or how we should treat others that fall into such sin.
