teresaq Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 OK, realizing I am one of the last SDAs to believe that God is indeed a real Person, as in has a body/form, if I could be humored I would appreciate it. When Moses asked to see God's glory God said Moses could see His "back parts" but not His face because Moses would die. I have an idea why seeing God's face might kill man whereas His "back parts" wouldn't, I'm curious as to what others might think. Daniel chapter 10 might help also. Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted May 21, 2011 Administrators Posted May 21, 2011 The Hebrew word, as I understand it was probably more accurately, buttocks. Some translations in other contexts say "hinder parts". ( I have been chastised for saying that in this story, God "mooned" Moses.) In a metaphorical sense this was associated with badness, the worst part. Bad, impure, unclean things came from that end of the body. And ones' face was associated with ones best or goodness. God was saying to Moses, "To show you my glory at its least you can survive. So I will show that part of me that shows my glory the least, the worst part of me, if you will. I will turn around and show you my behind, that you can survive." In a way this may have been hidden promise, The worst that God can show us is survivable. Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth. (And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)
nuff sed Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 Tom said he had been chastised for saying that God "mooned" Moses. God DOES have a sense of humor, doesn't He? Nuff sed................. Quote
Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted May 22, 2011 Administrators Posted May 22, 2011 I certainly thought so! But I have found that many of his faithful followers don't... fccool Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Teresa, Out of sheer curiosity, why is it do you think that God would be "carnal", meaning that he has a body like ours? Quote
Administrators Gail Posted May 22, 2011 Administrators Posted May 22, 2011 Re: if I could be humored I would appreciate it.. If I had something witty for you, I'd use it- better than the alternative! The Bible says that God is a spirit and that those that worship Him must do so in spirit and in truth- John 4:24. I'd be interested in what you have to say! Re: the buttocks- new one on me! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted May 22, 2011 Members Posted May 22, 2011 I agree with you, teresaq...I just don't know exactly *what* He is formed of...not flesh, certainly. I think it's out of our realm of knowledge. Quote Pam      Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted May 22, 2011 Administrators Posted May 22, 2011 I think God can morph into whatever form he wants to, as is necessary to do what he needs to do. This was demonstrated by coming to us in human flesh as a man, Jesus, so as to relate to us and be able to best identify with us. The glimpse of God given to Moses, said he had to tone it down dramatically, because humans could not handle his intensity. I think when God has appeared in nonhuman form it is too confusing (think Ezekiel) or frightening to people. Even the moderate divine manifestation of angels was frightening. The first words these messengers delivered was to not be afraid. God appears to us in a form to which we can best relate. A disembodied voice is scary. So he puts words in our ear through a recognizable source, a mouth. Well, that would be odd alone, so He gives it the whole human form so we don't get all confused. Here is a thought - there is some elusive mysterious stuff in the universe that scientists call anti-matter or dark matter. They are just beginning to get a sense of it. Some have also described it as God-matter. Maybe there is something to this. God creating something out of nothing (that we can perceive) maybe God taking his essence anti-matter or material of other dimensions and converting it to something else and putting into our space time continuum, the human dimension. Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth. (And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)
teresaq Posted November 22, 2011 Author Posted November 22, 2011 I see what you are saying now, Tom, but I wouldn't be able to reword it at the moment. fccool, I don't think God has a body like ours, I think we have a body similar to His. Big difference. We were created in God's image, His form. To think the other way would be to say God was created, physically, in our image. I think we have a very material God - off topic - Who knew what would delight the senses and delight His as well. Quote facebook. /teresa.quintero.790
