That first link, promoting, well I'm not sure WHAT it was promoting, but certainly not a male/female relationship. It was, AT BEST, "disturbing". I could hardly read her "take" on the subject without wanting to throw up. Whew,,, I'm still repulsed by it.

The first article by Jennifer Knust, is an example of contemporary (liberal) Scriptural redefinition. While such conjecture is a regular contender for the informal title "Most Liberal Ideas of The Month Club" it is has the end result of making the Word of God of none effect.

Berit Kjos, in her excellent book "A Twist of Faith" documents the hundreds of women she has ministered to in an effort to pull some of them back from the edge of pantheism, enviromentalism, goddess worship et al... You would be amazed how these three are converging but that's another story..

Mrs. Knust's efforts to define David as a homosexual are just plain wrong. That is not the context of the friendship between those two, nor was it between Paul & Silas.

Everybody has their own opinion about women pastors, but we see this kind of theological deviancy more commonly among women in 'pastoral' leadership positions. I believe that gender confusion often begets more gender confusion, and I could cite a whole series of examples.

Gagnon's response is much more univocal and Scripturally faithful.

Knust appears to base her suppositions in a blend of eisogetics and Plato's symposium.

I always thought of that part about his love for Jonathan surpassing the love of women was just him saying, "better than sex". It's not often that a guy will say that, but it speaks to me of the scale of his regard for that relationship to his mate.

"Better than sex"? I don't see it that way, but I suppose one could draw that conclusion.

That saying is one I used to hear around the race track from time to time.

But no, I see Johnathan and David as a true, deep friendship, such as few of us have ever known, or ever will know. Something that might develop from shared great adversity, like two guys in a fox hole, under fire. Or in hand to hand combat with the enemy. Our when your lives at stake, being hunted, living under extreme duress. Such an environment creates a condition where your NOT fighting for "God and country", your fighting for the life of your friend(s). A connection that is not easy to understand unless you've gone through a similiar experience. A willingness to sacrafice their lives and more, their standings in the community, riches, wealth, glory, family, everything for each other. Such moments create a deeper and more binding love than even a woman, a womans love cannot even compare! It is almost beyond comprehension.

Oh dear, that sounds cold! My apologies. Indeed, you weren't that far off. Some analogies just work different on some folks than they do on others. I like the "fox hole" concept over the "love of a woman" concept, myself.
