My grandmother and I "celebrate" Memorial Day a week in advance--we try to beat the crowds at the cemeteries. So, every year I drive her back to town where she grew up, and we visit the graves of her mother, father, brothers, sisters and cousins; we visit my grandfather's grave and his mother, father, brothers, sisters and cousins. We visit her neighbor's graves, her teacher's graves and graves of not-sure-how-we're-related relatives. It is an exhausting day for her, but by the end of the day I've heard so many stories (again) and I am proud to know I come from such a strong group of characters. Memorial Day will be quite different for me when my grandmother passes away--I'm so glad I've had the chance to spend all this time with her now!

I went through recruit training with one of the brightest guys I've ever met. He had a degree in neuroscience, and worked as an analyst on Wall Street. After losing several friends on 9/11, he quit his job to enlist in the Marine Corps infantry. He was a natural leader, and always shared helpful wisdom and advice for us younger guys.

Much do my surprise and dismay, I discovered a few years later that he had been killed in action during the battle of Fallujah. This year for memorial day my wife and I set a place for him at our breakfast table, and I shared a few stories that I remembered of him. I know it's not much, but I want to help ensure that his sacrifice isn't forgotten.

That's good,Ig.I've never known anyone who was killed in battle.A few that were wounded (my dad on Iwo). I think that the country should more strongly encourage the rememberance of those who gave their lives for those of us who live to enjoy the benefits of their sacrifice. Your example could be a very influential starter.
