Administrators Gail Posted June 1, 2011 Administrators Posted June 1, 2011 What benefit is there to prayer for you? Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Members phkrause Posted June 1, 2011 Members Posted June 1, 2011 What benefit is there to prayer for you? For me its to keep in touch, it keeps me closer to him. If there is no one else to talk to, there is always our Lord. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
karl Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 What benefit is there to prayer for you? Unless you believe in a do-nothing, disinterested God. prayer is imperative. Can you imagine a child who never talks to his parents because he thinks there's no benefit in it? That would be like a person who doesn't pray. Quote
Overaged Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 What benefit is there to prayer for you? Maybe we could ask; "What benefit is prayer for others?" Quote "People [rarely] see...the bright light which is in the clouds..." (Job 37:21)"I cannot know why suddenly the stormshould rage so fiercely round me in it's wrathBut this I know: God watches all my pathAnd I can trust""God helps us to draw strength from the storm" - OveragedFaith makes things possible; it does not make them easy, Steps To Christ
Administrators Gail Posted June 3, 2011 Author Administrators Posted June 3, 2011 Yep- most certainly! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Overaged Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Yep- most certainly! I have sometimes been concerned about the attitudes and ideas engendered in the "whats in it for me" mentality regarding prayer. Quote "People [rarely] see...the bright light which is in the clouds..." (Job 37:21)"I cannot know why suddenly the stormshould rage so fiercely round me in it's wrathBut this I know: God watches all my pathAnd I can trust""God helps us to draw strength from the storm" - OveragedFaith makes things possible; it does not make them easy, Steps To Christ
Administrators Gail Posted June 3, 2011 Author Administrators Posted June 3, 2011 Tell me more... I'm interested also in the idea that prayer doesn't change my circumstances, but it changes me to accept and work with them. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Members phkrause Posted June 3, 2011 Members Posted June 3, 2011 Come to think about it, I believe James Londis wrote a piece on this! Not positive but maybe! If I can find it? And that's a big if!!! I'll try to post it. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Administrators Gail Posted June 3, 2011 Author Administrators Posted June 3, 2011 That sounds great! I would be interested :) Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Overaged Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Tell me more... I'm interested also in the idea that prayer doesn't change my circumstances, but it changes me to accept and work with them. That actually does sound interesting. I would like to dig into that more too; but alas, that everlasting question: "How do we do this?" Quote "People [rarely] see...the bright light which is in the clouds..." (Job 37:21)"I cannot know why suddenly the stormshould rage so fiercely round me in it's wrathBut this I know: God watches all my pathAnd I can trust""God helps us to draw strength from the storm" - OveragedFaith makes things possible; it does not make them easy, Steps To Christ
Administrators Gail Posted June 3, 2011 Author Administrators Posted June 3, 2011 I mean that's besides the external supernatural things that prayer accomplishes... I mean, what God accomplishes, to His glory, in connection with prayer. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Overaged Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 I think I knew that's where you were coming from. Would you believe I have sometimes found it frustrating when God DID answer my prayer the way I WANTED Quote "People [rarely] see...the bright light which is in the clouds..." (Job 37:21)"I cannot know why suddenly the stormshould rage so fiercely round me in it's wrathBut this I know: God watches all my pathAnd I can trust""God helps us to draw strength from the storm" - OveragedFaith makes things possible; it does not make them easy, Steps To Christ
Administrators Gail Posted June 3, 2011 Author Administrators Posted June 3, 2011 A bonus, huh? :) Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Scion Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 I think Ellen White said that prayer was opening your heart to God as to a friend. I'm not sure if that is her exact wording, but it sure is a beautiful picture. For me, prayer has a lot of benefits. It: * Keeps me focused on God's presence in my life. * Comforts me when I think no human is listening or interested. * Gives me someone to celebrate with when I am happy. * Gives me someone to mourn with when I am sad. * Reminds me that God is in control of all things, or he wouldn't be able to hear my voice (or thoughts) from Heaven. * Allows me to unite my intentions with others who desire the same things. * Gives me confidence that the things I need will be given to me. But those are just the psychological reasons. Spiritually, I believe that God does answer the prayers of His people. Just because He always knew what I would ask for simply means that He planned to answer them all along :) Quote Scion
Administrators Gail Posted June 3, 2011 Author Administrators Posted June 3, 2011 I agree- it IS a beautiful picture! How is this for a picture of His love for you: Quote: His left arm is under my head, and his right arm embraces me. Song of Solomon 2:6 Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Raphael Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 Prayer is... 1. A daily staple, which absence will bring about unimaginable havoc 2. Array of cosmic defense, subduing evil offenses and its sedative fragrances 3. A free consultative service which may keep you from subtle deceptive counsel 4. Sweeping away loneliness and keeping you company 5. Source of health maintenance & disease cure & prevention Quote Test me with thy might but grant me safe passage. Now, who said that?
Administrators Gail Posted June 4, 2011 Author Administrators Posted June 4, 2011 Very nice- thank you very much :) Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
whatisthis Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 Without prayer I'm so alone, no matter what's going on or who's there. God is a very present friend, I don't want to know what I'd do without Him, of course if totally cut off I wouldn't even be, but it seems when I forget to pray I stop being in bits and broken pieces, and with Him, He heals me as fast as I can stand it! God heals some people all at once of course, but some like me, have thorns for our own good in the healing process, He leadeth me sometimes by still waters and pastures serene and sometimes His being there for me is all that makes the darkness bearable in a narrow and steep valley indeed! Not that it is necessary in order to make known to God what we are, but in order to enable us to receive Him. Prayer does not bring God down to us, but brings us up to Him.
