Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted June 21, 2011 Members Posted June 21, 2011 For all you mechanics out there, I need some advice. I have a cordless lawn mower and the battery needs to be replaced because it won't fully charge anymore. Even when the green light comes on, the blade underneath barely revolves...I've cleaned it off, but still doesn't help. Last time this happened, I needed a new battery. But *last* time, I had my Dad around to do the battery swap. Now, it's me trying to figure it out. The top of the mower needs to be taken off (I think) to get to the battery. I cannot figure out how to get the darn thing off. There are two bolts, but they don't have any edges for a screwdriver. Does the thing snap on and off? I have the original manual, but it doesn't give any info on changing the battery. I don't want to take the mower some place...I don't have a way to transport it. Should I give the mower a good kick, or what?? Quote Pam Meddle Not In the Affairs of Dragons; for You Are Crunchy and Taste Good with Ketchup. cricket Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 Rudywoofs, last summer I had to repair 3 lawn mowers--and found YouTube to be a life saver! There are a lot of DIY lawn mower repair videos. I just typed in the search bar for the brand of mower and the problems--then had 5 or 6 different videos of amateur (and some professional) repairmen showing me just what I needed to know. Quote
ClubV12 Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 When my boy was little I bought him one of those battery powered Jeeps to drive around the yard. That tiny battery didn't last long. So, I took a Sawzall and cut out part of the hood and mounted a wheel chair battery in it's place. That Jeep would run all day on a single charge. Pull the battery out of your car. Fasten the battery to the body of the mower (use a couple of bungee cords). Small jumper cables from the big battery to the little one. Bada boom, bada bing, mow all day. ...just sayin' Dsclaimer: I had to increase the fuse size, which resulted in burned wires and a melted throttle switch but it didn't actually catch fire, mostly it didn't. Your results may vary. Quote
Members rudywoofs (Pam) Posted June 22, 2011 Author Members Posted June 22, 2011 I figured out how to unfasten the lid to the lawn mower. The screws looked just like the screws on the heat pump out back. So I took the screws out and lifted up the housing. There's an electrical circuit board on top of the battery. I haven't figured out how it connects to the battery. There are no how-to videos for my vintage mower. It's a Black and Decker CM500...it's about 15 yrs old. I had to special order the battery. No one at the company would tell me anything except to take it to an authorized dealer. There are no authorized dealers for this old of a mower! I'm stuck. The lawn mower is sitting in my garage half taken apart. It was hot in there, so I came back inside and played a computer game. I'm feeling like Scarlett O'Hara...
