WayneV Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 To All, As I was reading in Exodus 4 a couple of evenings ago, this passage lept out at me. It seems out of context. Moreover, the meaning of it seems unclear. Therefore, I have some questions: Why is this passage located at this point in the narrative? What is the purpose of this passage in the context of the surrounding verses? Why is this passage included in the text at all? What doe this text mean? What does it communicate to us today? Thanks in advance to all who are willing to attempt answering. Light Fox Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 My understanding of the passage is that Moses was setting out on his journey as the deliverer of Israel with his wife and sons in tow. Moses had not circumcised his children for whatever reason, and thus was not keeping the Abrahamic covenant. Rather than allowing him to continue on, Yahweh appeared to him and had him - or, it seems, his wife - correct the issue. It really doesn't get into details of the interaction, but having a deliverer for Israel that didn't follow the covenant of Israel was, needless to say, a serious issue to be avoided. As far as Zipporah's reaction, well, the commentary I've read indicates that she - being a Midianite - was opposed to the practice and was herself a large part of the reason for it not having been performed on their son. She also seems to be expressing resentment in the passage. That's something that has the ring of truth to me, though couldn't be stated definitively from the text. Quote www.Adventistry.to/Answers
WayneV Posted June 24, 2011 Author Posted June 24, 2011 Thanks, Qinael, for your input. I gathered the same after reviewing a couple of commentaries. It would still be interesting to know if anyone has a different perspective to offer. ClubV12 Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 I've thought of this incidence in terms of relating it to the last days time of trouble coming upon Gods people. Moses did not warrant the protection of God before the "Government" because he had unconfessed sin or failed on known duty. Continuing on without rectifying this he would have surely met a quick death. In the time of trouble the people of God will have to stand without an intercessor before the Government of God, without spot or blemish. Those who have not prepared themselves by working out their relationship to Him, before hand, will not be able to stand. Quote

While having no Intercessor may be worrisome for some individuals who do not recognize the importance of inviting Jesus into their lives, it is of little concern to those who place their trust in the God of all faith. whbae Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Qoute from Harper's study Bible; Exodus 4.25,26 The scriptures do not tell us why Moses had not cirumcised his sons. Perhaps it was to please his wife, who was not an Israelite. But this neglect of the covenant cut his son off from Israel, for circumcision was the seal of the covenant. Moses could not serve as God's deliverer unless and until he obeyed this ordinance. Zipporah performed the rite for her husband. In the N.T., real circumcision is of the heart and not of the flesh(Roman 2.29). Won Quote
Haldog Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 In the time of trouble the people of God will have to stand without an intercessor before the Government of God, without spot or blemish. Really? Where do you find this idea in the bible? In my bible, the Lamb of God came and took away the sins of the world. He is the one without spot or blemish, when God looks at me he remembers my sins no more because He see's His Son Jesus Christ in my stead. No mediator? That sounds like heresy to me. If you find out that you were wrong and change your thinking then you are the better for it. If you go to the Word and find out that you were right then you have been strengthened. But either way always go to the Word!!” Billye Brim
Tallmark Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Really? Where do you find this idea in the bible? The same place where it states that Peter sank while walking on water because he felt egotistical, and Paul's "thorn in the side" was poor eyesight. NOWHERE! Quote

It is found in Revelation 16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. Wherein the pattern that is on the earth of what is done in heaven; when Christ shall end His mediation in the Most Holy Place, and put off His priestly robes and put on His robe of vengeance to pour out His wrath on the ungodly BEFORE He comes. This period of time between His exiting the role of Mediator to the time of His coming, THERE IS NO MORE A MEDIATOR, thus the command to His saints to "keep their garments" free from sin. WayneV Posted June 26, 2011 Author Posted June 26, 2011 @ ClubV12, @LHC, & @whbae: Thanks for your "on-point" comments. There were some good thoughts expressed. Now that the thread has been hijacked by an "intercessor" discussion, I'm out. It would be nice if people would start their own threads when a thread veers off-topic. Oh well...
