Overaged Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 The Cross Of Christ God's Work For Us At the risk of repeating other topics; I thought it would be interesting to start this topic on The Cross Of Christ. The intention is to utilize Adventist insights, and to eventually cover a broad spectrum of topics here which are involved by the problem of sin; and God's work in Christ to solve this problem. Many people seem to really grapple with Christ's atoning work; it has been made very complicated by some; yet it seems so simple to others. My personal view; after much grappling, is that "the gospel of Jesus Christ is simply wonderful; and wonderfully simple." ( - selected) As a way of adding some "Adventist" input into this topic; I have started to read a book by George Knight, "The Cross Of Christ;" and so I will draw thoughts and quotes from this, as well as the Bible, and some Ellen G White materials. Quote: "The cross of Christ is the central pillar on which hangs the "far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." "If any man will come after Me," Christ says, "let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me." 2 Corinthians 4:17; Matthew 16:24." (Acts Of The Apostles, pg 560) It appears that the Bible supports a cross for Christ; and a cross for us. Is there anyone who can help me to explain the two a little more? Knight, in his book, tends to view the work of Christ (on the cross) as central to the theme of a great cosmic conflict. The battle between good and evil. He identifies himself with the dilema that many others have faced; and that is the fact that reading certain parts of the Bible makes him or used to make him, really angry. We have all experienced this. The Bible has lots of accounts of people not getting what they really deserve; and this kind of scenario repeats itself in our lives today - and yes. It can still make us angry. I have come to view the cross of Christ in this context; and to view Christ's work for us (the Atonement) as the central "hub" of the great cosmic conflict we find ourselves embroiled in. Perhaps, it can be summed up by the following Quote: " We live in a hard, unfeeling, uncharitable world. Satan and his confederacy are trying their every art to seduce and entrap the souls for whom Christ has given his precious life. And every one who loves God in sincerity and truth will love the souls for whom Christ has died. If we wish to do good to souls, our success with these souls will be in proportion to their belief in our belief and appreciation of them. Respect shown to the human, struggling soul, is the sure means through Christ Jesus, of the restoration of the self-respect the man has lost. Our advancing ideas of what he may become is a help we cannot appreciate. . . . Treat them you may as they deserve. What if Christ had treated us thus? He the undeserving was treated as we deserve. While we are treated by Christ with grace and love as we do not deserve, but as He deserved. Treat some characters as you think they richly deserve, and you cut off from them the last thread of life, spoil your influence, and ruin the soul. Will it pay? No! I say, No! A hundred times. No! Bind these souls, who need all the help it is possible for you to give them, close to a living, sympathizing, pitying heart, overflowing with Christ-like love, and you will save a soul from death and hide a multitude of sins. {GH, May 1, 1898 par. 3}" The cross of Christ should play out somehow in our everyday life; can you tell us how it does this with you? Quote "People [rarely] see...the bright light which is in the clouds..." (Job 37:21)"I cannot know why suddenly the stormshould rage so fiercely round me in it's wrathBut this I know: God watches all my pathAnd I can trust""God helps us to draw strength from the storm" - OveragedFaith makes things possible; it does not make them easy, Steps To Christ

These stories of lostness represent some very interesting aspects of God's love. When the sheep and the coin were lost, someone conducted a very intense search for them. But when the son was lost, there was no search. On the contrary; when the son asked for his inheritance, the Father gave it to him. Why? Isn't the son worth infinitely more than the coin or the sheep? Quote "People [rarely] see...the bright light which is in the clouds..." Administrators Gail Posted June 29, 2011 Administrators Posted June 29, 2011 Why? Isn't the son worth infinitely more than the coin or the sheep? Overaged, thanks for starting this study! Cool! One difference between the son and the inanimate objects is that the son knew he was lost. He had a full awareness of what he was leaving, and he had a full awareness of his lost condition after all the fun died away. There might be a lesson in there for us when we know people who walk away from salvation. It is not for us to yell at them what a mistake they are making, but to let them know how their direction hurts the family and then just give them their space. After all, God lets us choose which way we would like to walk. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Gail Posted June 29, 2011 Administrators Posted June 29, 2011 I liked Knight's book, Sin and Salvation... I probably would like this one, too :) Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
