Analysis: Fictionalized 'Revelations'

By Pat Nason

UPI Hollywood Reporter

Los Angeles, CA, Mar. 21 (UPI) -- NBC is describing its upcoming miniseries "Revelations" as a fictional thriller, but the subject matter -- the end of the world as foretold in the Bible -- is something that a good many viewers are likely to take quite seriously.

I agree: so when will the call to just plain ditch the box from Adventist homes go out? Surely EGW's calls against card-playing and other 'amusements' in the home would be extended to TV if she were around today: both from a content point of view and just a use of time point of view. Just get rid of the glass teat (Neil Postman), the devil's eye (Chris de Burgh), the altar in the living room.

May 1 weekend(I think that's the right week) is Turn Off The TV Week for Adventist Families across the North American Division. Adventist families need to spend more time together and this is a weekt that is emphasising that. I think we need to emphasis this stronger because most of us plan our day around the TV schedule. Many years ago I chose to get rid of my TV and I've kept that promise to myself and still do not have one though perhaps the Internet has taken it's place somewhat. Sad.........

Actually if you read TIME's article their take is that the problem is the morality police that document all the objectionable stuff broadcast on TV and are now going after cable. At least that is how it came off to me.

I think the answer is to get Christian programming and limit your viewing to it. If you are like me you will find yourself watching much less TV and spending more time with the family, doing chores and reading. Christian satellites service is available from SkyAngel for about $12/month or 3ABN sells a dish for a little more than $200 that recieves 5 channels and has no monthly fees.

You know how you can keep from being sucked into sin by your culture? Read old books. Not just EG White but read old books written by ministers 100+ years ago.

darlene, my older daughter Cassie (she's 14) plays violin in a worship band at another Christian church and attends youth services there, and they've just done a 'media fast' for the youth: 30 days with no movies, internet, TV or computer games. Just spensing extra time with family and God. She read Walter Wangerin's 'The Book of God' - a novelisation of the Bible - and enjoyed that very much, and some other devotional books. She kind of challenged me to do a media fast too, and I should sometime - but when I'm working I'm on the computer all day every day...

Think...

Think...

Think...

TRICKLE DOWN IMMORALITY = CRIME AND CLERGY CONNECTION..

NFDMTTS (RELIGIOUS DOPE)

There are 168 hours in a week and the preacher has 1/3 of 1% of that time..and if the speaker shares worldly stuff....

Another angle...

"THE ONLY THING NECESSARY FOR THE TRIUMPH OF EVIL IS FOR GOOD MEN TO DO NOTHING"

ED BURKE

This is why, when the words from the pulpit are so lame that most are not impressed enough to invite anyone...or one doesn't want to share because the follow up from their question is ..where do you go??

And you don't want them bummed out on mediocre's ville..or worse..

So we have light under a bushel and salt poured into the street drains..and the only thing that is going on is sending $$$$$$$$ outside of this continent....

and the result is ...if one pulls the plug on the TV GOD...thousands will have withdrawal symptoms ..and there will be SDA psychosis in epidemic proportions...

Why thank you for paying attention... grin.gif

the touchy spots...

1. Stomach (diet)

2, Groin (sex life)

3. TV remote..(sensational, vicarious, fanatasy, perverted, depraved lifestyle)

4. Wallet or charge cards..( $$$ GOD)

Thanks for mentioning the Turn Off TV Week. I hadn't heard about it. We shouldn't be using TV much at all, IMHO; there's nothing good there any more.

In the "olden days" most families' living room furniture was grouped around the fireplace, as the center of conversation. Nowadays the living rooms are becoming smaller, since people don't sit in the parlor as much any more, and the "family rooms" have their furniture grouped facing the new center of attention--the TV. The idol in the house. We ought to change that!

I have some friends who are raising two young daughters with absolutely no TV whatsoever. They do have a TV set, but no cable (hence no TV programming at all), and it's rarely even visible behind its built-in cabinet door. They use it only for carefully chosen and monitored videos -- occasionally.

The children are busy with their school work, their after-school activities and music lessons; and the parents are extremely involved with them.

They also have no sugar in their diet. Which helps them control themselves and not be hyperactive.

For "treats" for their good behavior (doing household chores promptly, practicing their music without complaint, taking care of their pets without prompting, etc.) they get to put a marble into a jar. When the jar is full they get to go on a special outing with their parents.

I realize this is O.T. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/129933-offtopic2.gif" alt="" /> Sorry.

Well since I no longer have a family and am alone. I use the TV for company. Not all the time mind you. I do listen to the radio, watch a DVD or have nothing on at all.

I admit to being a TV addict. A couch potatoe. Whatever you want to call it.

That said, I have also in the last 30 years, resisted the TV. I also have members in my family who depend upon the TV for relaxation. There are many days where coming home from work, one needs to 'veg'...not think, let time pass without thinking...I have seen that, in others in my family...

I have attempted to remove the TV only to be threatened within a inch of my life that it does not need to be out of the house.

So, what's a person with a propensity to TV addiction to do?

Just checked the dates for the Adventist RV Turn-off week here at work and find that it is April 25-May 1, 2005.

I like the idea of a 30-day fast, Bravus. Sounds like a good plan and it sounds like your daughter did well at participating in it.

We probably need more than a one-week TV Turn-off time for many of us and/or our families. Perhaps we could say it is a contributing factor to our salvation? Or perhaps I'm jumping to the wrong conclusion?

I am going to address one of the common excuses Brother Neil listed in his post. But first let me commend Brother Neil for trying to remove the TV - sometimes we have to make compromises to keep peace in the family. I would suggest getting Christian programming and hopefully they can be weaned onto it.

<hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

I will suggest that relaxation will be better achieved by relaxing to music either in a recliner, sofa or in a hot bath. Aroma theropy also helps so light some sented candles and dim the lights.

Fact is that most of TV is lies. It is made of stories that stir up our emotions. So we need to ask ourselves why we enjoy being lied to. Why do we enjoy watching people pretend to be doctors, policemen, dancers, familymen, etc? Now I am one that believes fiction has its place - when it teaches us a lesson. Some of Christ's parables were fiction. But the overwelming amount of television teaches no postive lessons. Quite to the contrary. Most programming is damageing to our spiritual lives.

Oops. Yes, some seniors might just get upset if their RVs were turned off for a week. Sorry about that! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

Well, I like TV. It is a wonderful media, and it is our "window to the world" (former NBC News anchor and author Tom Brokaw). I learn so much from television viewing - and I do not have to justify or qualify what I watch or when to any human being.

JimBob7, the reason people have the 'touchy spots' (and I feel like writing this every time I see it) is because of the 'guardians of the faith' who can't mind their own business and need to control the behavior of others in the church.

Just because John Doe does not sweetly agree with these 'saints' who expostulate their extreme views, does not mean that John is having sin or addiction problems in the 'touchy spots'. Maybe it just means that John and Jane Doe have had enough of church busybodies who practice religious addiction and compulsion by making sure that others around them are 'holy'.

Dear Lord, please save me from 'your people'.
