Please do not make my heart ache when you say such idol words rudywoofs. You are hurting yourself, and benumbing your spiritual perceptions. You know very well the implications of this. The cherubim on the earthly Ark of the Covenant were not real either, yet God dwelt between these two fake cherubim in the OT. It is a figurative expression of the original in heaven, which has real angels. Of course the Pope can't put real angels there, so he has to fake it. He does indeed usurp the High Priestly ministry of of Christ in the minds of hundreds of millions of people the world over. It's just that he's been doing it for so many years and that he says such nice things at times, people find it impossible to believe he is who the Bible says he is. Most people think his teachings are totally harmless and even a positive blessing. This idea, or something very close to it, has even worked its way into the minds of many Seventh-day Adventists. I have a cousin who was brought up SDA but left the church when he was a teen-ager, and now he thinks the pope is great. He went to Rome during Pope John Paul II's pontificate and visited the Vatican. I was shocked to learn that my dear cousin-- the son of my dad's little brother-- was apparently in absolute awe of the pope. How could this happen?!!! There's also the well-known former SDA pastor and leader in the GC who is now a Roman Catholic. I would have become a Catholic myself by this time if I didn't know the Bible and the prophecies. When people lay these things aside or disbelieve them, it is no wonder they join the Roman Catholic Church. It has a lot of beauty and teaches many smooth, attractive things. It does not mean primarily, "against Christ," but as you say, "in place of Christ." But most people, foolishly, are looking for a leader who is 100% against Christ, like the character in the movie, "Left Behind." That scenario will never happen. The real antichrist-- the man of lawlessness-- claims to be Christ's biggest supporter and defender. And many of the things he says are good and true.
