tribeofjudah Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 Ok, so I've been reading and have made some personal notes on the margins of my Bible. I'm reading the New Century Version, which is pretty good, imo..... (let me know yours) So I come across the fact that Shem was blessed by Noah and that Shem is the "bloodline" of Abram and the Jewish people. My thought is that these are the Shemetic/Semetic people...? I've done NO research online or books. Just a connection of dots. Could the Semites be from father Shem...? Another thought is that Abram was "called" the Hebrew first in Gen 14.... I connect the dots and say he's Hebrew from the city of Hebron...? Could Hebrew be derived from Hebron?? Just some of my interesting thoughts on word origins.... NO research, just thoughtful "speculation"..... What say you...? Quote
fccool Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 You are absolutely correct about Semites. Although, Semites are not merely Jews, but middle-easter people in general, both Arabs and Jews. As far as the origin of the word Hebrew, from what I can remember it loosely derives from Aramaic word that means "immigrant", or a person who transitioned from one location to other. I may be wrong... check it out. Quote
teresaq Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 Oh, thank God!! You read craziness for too long and you can end up insane!! There were a couple of pages that gave me something to chew on but then it quickly devolved into insanity! This time I could feel the insanity coming over me!! No wonder I've been fighting it for so long, tho I wasn't as conscious of just what it was. OK, well now I'll get off MY RANT! My apologies, tribeofjudah. Please forgive me and allow me to hijack your topic for that moment. First I would like to say it is nice to meet yet another thinking person... A quick look at e-sword and I think fccool may be right about Hebrew meaning "immigrant". They were a wandering people for a few hundred years... Quote facebook. /teresa.quintero.790
tribeofjudah Posted August 27, 2011 Author Posted August 27, 2011 I shared this with a Jewish friend of mine and he thought it was interesting too, though he didn't add anymore info. Quote
hfsturges Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Who are the Hebrews? Genesis 10:21-24 list Eber as the fourth generation from Shem. Apparently Eber stood out in that line-up, as verse 21 speaks of the father of all the children of Eber. Apparently Eber had many children. Abraham was the tenth generation from Noah, or the ninth from Shem. Eber can easily be associated with "Hebrew." Abraham and Isaac were "Hebrews," and the term "Israel" comes from the experience of Jacob. Quote Hubert F. Sturgeswww.everlastingcovenant.com
tribeofjudah Posted August 30, 2011 Author Posted August 30, 2011 Sure...I'll go with that: Eber = H(eber)ews = Hebrews Notice how you/I/we can all connect insightful dots. We pray that these "connections" are given by the Holy Spirit. Quote
gretta Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 The note I have written into my bible is that the word "hebrew" translates to: "One who has crossed over", and that Abraham was called "hebrew" because he had come out of Ur and had crossed over into the canaanite lands. In this sense, it is similar to "immigrant". I enjoy the spiritual pondering made available by the "crossed over" language and the underlying topic of "this is not my home". :) Quote Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!2 Corinthians 9:15

teresaq Posted September 3, 2011 Posted September 3, 2011 Hmmm, that really points to the book of Hebrews where those who suffered for God did not consider this world their home. They looked for their real home... Quote facebook. /teresa.quintero.790
Members phkrause Posted September 3, 2011 Members Posted September 3, 2011 Interesting point gretta, I believe the SDA Bible Commentary also says something to that effect. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
