Flashback: Obama calls adding $4 trillion to national debt “unpatriotic”

Yesterday, I wrote about the CBS News story showing that Barack Obama had added over $4 trillion to the national debt in less than three years, which puts the current President on track in one term (and probably less) to beat the record that took his predecessor two terms to set. Some called this an unfair attack, noting that Congress authorizes spending, a point I addressed yesterday and which does Democrats no good at all. But guess who else blamed rising national debt on a President? Why, it’s Candidate (and then-Senator) Obama,. who not only blamed George Bush for adding more national debt than his previous 42 predecessors combined, but also questioned Bush’s patriotism for the same policies that Obama accelerated as President himself:

Obama says, The problem is, is that the way Bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion for the first 42 presidents – #43 added $4 trillion by his lonesome, so that we now have over $9 trillion of debt that we are going to have to pay back — $30,000 for every man, woman and child. That’s irresponsible. It’s unpatriotic.

“Credit card from the Bank of China”? That was a favorite phrase of Obama’s during the campaign. A quick search shows that he used it in an April 2008 debate, this June 2008 appearance, and others as well, usually tying it to tax cuts.

And what exactly has Obama done as President? Despite claiming that he has known that deficit reduction has been needed since the first day he took office, Obama has offered no deficit reduction proposals in his term as President. In fact, he has submitted budget proposals that have massively expanded deficit spending.

Just how patriotic is that? After all, if Obama can use the increase in the national debt to question Bush’s patriotism, doesn’t it follow that increasing deficit spending by 152% per month makes Obama 152% more “unpatriotic” than Bush?

Regardless if Hannity was blabbing about it doesn't change the sheer hypocrisy.

You should really change stations or try to do something about your obsession with those like Hannity. Tough to believe I know but there is a conservative life beyond them

My job requires me to drive a lot so... I listen to the radio. I normally go between NPR, Conservative talk radio, Contemporary Christian and my MP3. Some of the liberal talking heads on NPR are actually harder to listen to than the conservative blabber mouths so I think I end up listening to radical-right more than the loony-left. One thing for sure, listening to them both assures me I am in the moderate middle.

I was not asking why you listen,makes little difference to me.

You just seem to have this obsession with conservative talk radio being the basis for everything a conservative says or thinks. Obviously it is the basis for you. Long before a Limbaugh or Hannity I was raised by conservative parents. Parents that could actually reason for themselves.

The moderate middle is really a watered down democrat.

Regardless if this was heard on Hannity or not,what does that have to do with this type of hypocrsy from the president?

I will concede that Obama is a hypocrite. However I must add that most politicians are so that revelation comes with a big "so what?"

What probably happened is that Obama's speech writers were different before than they are now. So he would say whatever his speech writers wrote before and now with new speech writers he is contradicting himself. I think most politicians are guilty of the same thing.

One thing I think is positive is that these contradictions are exposed by the press. That is something good that FOXNews has done. Before, many times liberal politicians would get a pass and conservative politicians would be nailed by the mainstream networks. One can argue about whether or not FOXNews is fair and balanced within itself but one thing for sure - FOXNews gives the conservatives a voice where the mainstream networks were failing. So in the broad spectrum of news outlets, FOXNews provides balance. I get most of my news at home from Good Morning America (ABC), FOXNews and Al Jazeera English. That provides a good balance. On the road, I listen to commentary from NPR and Conservative Talk Radio.

Actually it was Obama that was being parroted,no one else. If Shane picked this up on Hannity then Hannity was parroting Obama as well.

Nice tho how you shift the responsibility for what was said by Obama to the "loony right"

Maybe the concept of being responsible for what you say and speaking honestly is new to you with the advent of talk radio but it was something my parents knew and understood years before "the looney right"

The terms "radical right" and "looney left" are terms that are often used by political commentators. Those on the left often call the conservatives "radical right". Those on the right often call liberals "looney left". So by using these terms I was not trying to be inflammatory but trying to agree with both sides. Yes to the liberals - many on the right do present themselves as "radical". Yes to the conservatives - many on the left do present themselves as "looney".

Since both of those terms is commonly used among commentators, I hope they can be safely used here without anyone getting angry about them.

It isn't the words you choose,it is your rather arrogant assumption that those that don't take your middle of the road approach you do cannot have come to their beliefs independent of right wing talk radio.

I am quite a bit older than you and hate to burst that little bubble.My views were formed long before right wing talk radio.

Obviously yours come from the radio.

I don't care where Obama's speech came from,he and he alone is responsible for the words out of his mouth as is anyone. It is a matter of record and knowing how Obama is, maybe his current speech writers or Obama himself should double check.Especially double check what his beliefs were before

I still would like to know what possible difference it makes if Hannity or whoever said it.

It is Obama that has condemned Bush at every turn,blamed Bush for his own incompetence.Time and time again you will find Obama saying whatever he thinks makes him look good.

Does he have any core values?

Obama says this stuff as if he thinks nobody knows that he has piled more onto the national debt than Bush, and in far less time.

What he's doing is betting that most americans (at least a majority) are stupid, and believe everything they see and hear in the mainstream media.

Certainly people can and do come to their independent beliefs apart for radio, TV and newspaper commentators. Hannity will attack Obama for doing the same thing that he defended Bush for doing. Hannity is a partisan hack. It is a simple as that. He gets great ratings because their are a lot of people that think like he does and want someone on the radio and TV to agree with them.

You have failed simple math. It is entirely possible that it was sent to me because someone had been listening to Hannity. I did not ask. However,what does that have to do with the obvious hypocrsy of Obama as long as the clip is true?

I checked out various links,none of which was a right wing radio personality.All said the same.

Sometimes your simple math is to simple. I do not watch TV and the time listening to radio last week may have totaled 3 hours.
