Mem1 Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 After a discussion on the genealogy of Jesus Christ were it was mentioned that he was from the tribe of Levi or Juda, I began searching for in the bible. However that did not clarfy the issue as the books of Luke and Mathew are not clear on the point and seem not agree. Moderators John317 Posted August 29, 2011 Moderators Posted August 29, 2011 The Bible is very clear that Jesus Christ was a descendent of David. David, of course, was from the tribe of Judah. The idea of some people that Jesus may have been from the tribe of Levi comes from the fact that Mary's cousin, Elizabeth, was of the tribe of Levi. But her being from the tribe of Levi wouldn't mean that Mary must be from the same tribe. There are others who don't believe Jesus was related at all to any human beings, yet the Bible clearly states otherwise. Take, for example, the following verses: 7:14 For [it is] evident that our Lord sprang out of Judah... Romans 1:3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; Romans 9:3 For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: 9:4 Who are Israelites; to whom [pertaineth] the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service [of God], and the promises; 9:5 Whose [are] the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ [came], who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen. Rev. 5:5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. Rev. 22:16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, [and] the bright and morning star. Finally, we should remember the verses in the Old Testament in which God promises David that a descendent of his--- out of his own body-- would sit on David's throne forever. Obviously that is referring to Jesus Christ. If Jesus was not of the tribe of Judah, then He wasn't the long-awaited Messiah. God gave us many particular identifying marks of the Messiah, and if Jesus didn't have all of those marks-- including being from the tribe of Judah, a descendent of David-- then we need to look for another person who will fulfill all of those marks of identity. Christ not only came from Israel, but He arose from a particular tribe, was born in a particular city, and was anointed and died at a particular time. All of which was predicted hundreds of years before it happened. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Administrators Gail Posted August 29, 2011 Administrators Posted August 29, 2011 If you are wondering how Jesus could be a High Priest when He wasn't a Levite: Psalm 110:4 The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews 7:3, NIV Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever. Melchizedek was both priest and king before there were the 12 tribes of Israel. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Charles Clever Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 The physician Luke and historian Irenaeus knew Joseph was not Jesus' real father. They trace Jesus’ blood lineage through Mary, Iranaeus knew as did other second century Christians: “King [Jesus] was born of the Virgin, herself of the lineage of David” (Irenaeus, Schaff translation. Against Heresies: Book III. 453). More on Christ's lineage in the e-book: http://revelado.org/thetimeoftheend.pdf Quote
ClubV12 Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 Jesus is the high priest of Heaven, not the earthly sanctuary. He could not officiate at the earthly temple, as in handling the sacrafice or carrying out any priestly duty. Had He attempted to do so He would have been put to death on the spot as that would have been a gross violation of Jewish law. Lion of the tribe of Judah, not a Levite. Quote
