alisha Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 Hello! I am Alisha Jensen and am currently teaching at Molokai Mission School. Right now I have grades 4, 6, and 8. I am looking for teachers who are willing to get their brains picked. This is my fourth year and I have a lot of questions that I would love to ask more experienced teachers. If you wouldn't mind answering a few, please let me know! Thanks, Alisha Quote
cricket Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 Alisha, Thought I'd mention the Education Forum for Adventist Teachers: Ed Forum It's run kind of like this, but you might be able to get a lot more input from teachers! Quote
Michelle Posted April 7, 2005 Posted April 7, 2005 Chris--good thought, though it's not TERRIBLY active, LOL. There are some VERY good teachers there who I'm sure would be willing to answer questions. I'm afraid I wouldn't be much help, as I taught secondary and don't feel I did that too well (and only taught 4 years as well). I know the Molokai school is elementary (we were at Kahili 95-99, when it actually had a sizeable secondary). What grades do you currently have? I assume it's a one-room school--how many students? alisha Posted April 8, 2005 Author Posted April 8, 2005 Thanks Christine. I have visited the education forum for adventist teachers. i didn't see much activity but i could try and post something. Michelle, the school has grades 3-8 but I only have three students right now. They are in 4th, 6th, and 8th. None of their curriculum overlaps! At least they are being exposed to a lot of different information. We went to the public library today to get books for a social studies project. That was fun. Alisha Quote
Moderators LynnDel Posted April 8, 2005 Moderators Posted April 8, 2005 Go ahead, Alisha, ask away! I may not be able to give you ideas, but no harm in trying. LD Quote LD
Moderators Bravus Posted April 8, 2005 Moderators Posted April 8, 2005 Hi Alisha I'm another high school guy, but I have *lots* of opinions to share. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Don't know much US elementary curriculum though... Bravus Quote Truth is important
cricket Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005 Well, Alisha, considering the fact that you have only one more student than I (I'm a homeschooling mom of 2), maybe I can help after all! I'm teaching 7th grade and 4th right now. Sorry to hear that the Ed Forum isn't very active. It might be a lot more active in the summer--teachers are busy, busy people!! Quote
Amelia Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005 I believe Neils wifey is an elementary teacher. If he doesnt respond to this thread, page him. Planey Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005 I am a high school Math teacher so may be of (very) limited use. However I am willing to try if you're willing to ask! Graeme Quote Graeme____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Moderators LynnDel Posted April 8, 2005 Moderators Posted April 8, 2005 I've been a member of the Ed Forum "forever" (I'm member #18, if I remember correctly) and it has never been very active. I think they should make it a requirement that every college SDA education major become a member and make regular posts. LD Quote LD
Michelle Posted April 8, 2005 Posted April 8, 2005 LynnDel--it might be useful if that happened, but it's also hard to have the time when you're teaching full-time. I never started frequenting it till after I quit teaching--just didn't have the time. I always thought it should be a listserv rather than a forum (or something like SDA net) but Mel and I disagreed on that, so it's a forum! M Quote
Administrators Gail Posted April 8, 2005 Administrators Posted April 8, 2005 And homeschoolers might have some good input, too. Those educators have the classic one-room schoolhouse and learn to incorporate units which can benefit their different grades all at once Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

I didn't want to volunteer my wife as she is busy with her classes and being principle. However, I will take some questions to her if you ask and I will relay them... As far as teachers go, I think my wife is one of the best, but I am talking as a hubby, and one who sees other teachers from time to time...I also think, suspect that Lynndel is also very good, but her modesty wont allow her to say anything. IMHO, a good teacher tends to hide thier abilities but exhibit a sound confence when interacting with people.... Of course, by my advocating my wife, et al., tends to put the other teachers here in a bad light. Let me just clarify by saying I have NOT seen them teach so have no idea as to how well they do.... alisha Posted April 8, 2005 Author Posted April 8, 2005 Thanks everyone! I am going to send private messages if I can figure out how. I appreciate your help! Quote

I don't think your advocating your wife puts other teachers in a bad light. Boost your wife all you can - it's good for her and for all of us. On a slightly different note but in the same vein (to mix metaphors; maybe I should say, "...in the same symphony"), I have always believed that for every Teacher of the Year, there are dozens who are just as competent but haven't been nominated by an individual. It all starts with nominations. Having started nominating a person for an award, I know it can be a daunting process. The majority of American humanity can't or won't bother with it. One of my friends who won the county-wide Teacher of the Year award almost refused to accept it because she felt she had in no way earned it for the above reason. Of course we all disagreed and told her we'd carry her up front if she didn't go herself - an easy task because she is about 4'8". LD Quote LD
