BobRyan Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 Mega-church pastor Andy Stanley speaks out on the 4th commandment in the video link below. Intro – Stanley condemns the idea that God gave Israel the Ten 10 to earn their way to heaven. - Rather obedience to the Ten – is merely a “confirmation” of a saving relationship with God. - 3:00 – Finally something practical. Yet you never feel guilty about breaking as if it is not even in there! - God made it number 4 – more important than do not kill, steal, do not commit adultery. - This commandment has more text and explanation than any other commandment. Andy edits God's commandment into "Thou shalt take a day off” and then quotes half of the actual commandment from the actual Bible. - 5:15 – it is a command we violate all the time…. - 6:08 Sounds threatening to you and to your business? - 7:35 – this is on par with thou shalt not murder and thou shalt not steal Quote John 8:32 - The Truth will make you free“The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin." COL 316.
Moderators John317 Posted September 12, 2011 Moderators Posted September 12, 2011 He has some great insights in the purpose of the Sabbath. I enjoyed the first video. Second video, on the misuse of God's name, is also very good. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
BobRyan Posted September 12, 2011 Author Posted September 12, 2011 Baptists who listen to Andy carefully with a bit of critical thinking and objectivity - could learn a lot from those two messages. in Christ, Bob Quote John 8:32 - The Truth will make you free“The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin." Administrators Gail Posted September 12, 2011 Administrators Posted September 12, 2011 I keep thinking it's only a matter of time... God's law in its complete understanding WILL be preached- I believe it! I'm amazed at how close the mainstream is coming to our understanding (in places). I would not be surprised if we see it coming from unexpected places, to join with the light of the angel of Revelation 18, who lightens the world with his glory. I like Andy Stanley :) Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Moderators John317 Posted September 12, 2011 Moderators Posted September 12, 2011 Jesus said that even the rocks will cry out if we don't. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
skyblue888 Posted September 12, 2011 Posted September 12, 2011 The rocks will cry out if God cannot find anyone from among His professed people who will. John, does this man actually come out and say that the seventh day is the Sabbath? I have listened to the first video and part of the second. He said a couple of things that raised my eyebrows. Do you agree with him when he says that God gave the 10 commamdments to the Hebrews not so they could have a relationship with Him but because they already had a relationship with Him? Had they not just been delivered from Egypt? "Living in the midst of idolatry and corruption, they had no true conception of the holiness of God, of the exceeding sinfulness of their own hearts, their utter inability, in themselves, to render obedience to God's law, and their need of a Saviour. All this they must be taught." P.P.371. And the Lord spoke the law to them because they had a relationship with Him? No. First they were to cling to the merits of the blood of a Saviour to come and they were to receive the law spoken by Christ as promises which would have made them partakers of Christ, partakers of His nature. In the New covenant, every command is a promise because it is the voice of God which imparts life, even the life of the Infinite One, to the soul that clings to the merits of the Saviour. So every command that proceeded out of the mouth of Christ at Sinai was a means by which the soul was to be united to Him by immortal links. John, do you agree? sky The Lord knew that they would not received the 10 commandments as promises. He allowed them to make promises to keep them so that they would be made to understand their sinfulness and their inability to render obedience. By entering into a covenant with God which they could not keep, they were to be taught the necessity of a Saviour, the necessity of faith in His merits in order to receive His righteousness by receiving the ten commandments not merely written, but spoken. "All Your commandments are righteousness." "I the Lord speak righteousness." All the words of My mouth are with righteousness." Ps.119:172; Isaiah 45:19,23; Prov.8:8. Quote "The merits of His sacrifice are sufficient to present to the Father in our behalf." S.C.36.

BobRyan Posted September 13, 2011 Author Posted September 13, 2011 Andy is making the same case that Christ makes in John 14:15 "IF you Love Me -- KEEP My Commandments". The 3rd commandment promises God's blessing to those who "Love Me and KEEP My Commandments". Andy is right to say that it is a good tree that produces good fruit - and "producing good fruit" is not the path that the bad tree takes to "become a good tree". in Christ, Bob Quote John 8:32 - The Truth will make you free“The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin."
