Moderators lazarus Posted September 13, 2011 Moderators Posted September 13, 2011 The police department in Santa Cruz, California, has begun an experiment that uses a mathematical algorithm to predict when and where certain crimes will be committed, and puts police on the scene before they happen. So far police have arrested five people using this technique of "predictive policing" and the rates of certain categories of crimes in the city have dropped significantly, perhaps as a result. The program has correctly predicted 40 percent of the crimes it was designed to monitor. Unlike Philip K. Dick's novel "The Minority Report" or the film inspired by the novel, the program relies on algorithms, and not mutants to predict the likelihood of something happening. The program comes from the field of applied mathematics or operations research, and the algorithm was developed by a 29-year-old mathematician at Santa Clara University. http://idealab.talkingpointsmemo.com/201...g.php?ref=fpblg Stan 1 Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. Members phkrause Posted September 13, 2011 Members Posted September 13, 2011 Reminds me of a movie I saw just a few years ago, with Tom Cruise, Vanilla something. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
fccool Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Minority Report , it's mentioned in the article. I don't think it's any different than cops checking out the places with frequent crimes... like popular drug-selling corners and etc. We can't keep up with Britain in terms of the future. These people have cameras on every corner, and they get fined for eating a sandwich in their car. Quote
Administrators Gail Posted September 13, 2011 Administrators Posted September 13, 2011 Oh, yeah- Minority Report! You're right- I remember that movie. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
fccool Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 PS, article mentions that Minority Report was a novel. It's not. It is a short story, and it's a bit different than a movie. Quote

Her lender, C.A.G. Acceptance of Mesa, Ariz., remotely activated a device in her car’s dashboard that prevented her car from starting. Before she could get back on the road, she had to pay more than $389, money she did not have that morning in March. http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2014/09/24/miss-a-payment-good-luck-moving-that-car/?_php=true&_type=blogs&src=twr&_r=0 Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities.
