Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted September 17, 2011 Moderators Posted September 17, 2011 There was a P-17 fighter jet which crashed today in Reno Nevada at an air show. The pilot was said to be an 80-year-old man who was very experienced, and an excellent pilot. He was killed in the crash, along with two others on the ground, plus 56 spectators being injured. I wonder if maybe he had a heart attack. It seems like 80 is awfully old to be flying aerobatic planes. Quote Jeannie

...Change is inevitable; growth is optional....
Moderators John317 Posted September 17, 2011 Moderators Posted September 17, 2011 I agree that 80 is too old to be flying aerobatic planes. They probably won't let that happen again at their shows. olger Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 It was a P-51 Mustang and the pilot was 74. Quote "Please don't feed the drama queens.."
Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted September 17, 2011 Author Moderators Posted September 17, 2011 It was a P-51 Mustang and the pilot was 74. Of course. You're right. I read two different accounts, late last night, and the "80" was obviously incorrect. [The type of plane was my own mistake.] Now the latest death count has risen to nine. Moderators John317 Posted September 17, 2011 Moderators Posted September 17, 2011 I read a news article that gave his age as both 74 and 80. lol But even if his real age was 74, I think that's also too old to be flying one of those planes in a show where people's lives are at risk. If he was going to fly, I don't think he should have been allowed anywhere near a crowd of people while doing those kinds of aerobatic tricks. Just my opinion. ClubV12 Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 FAA has some pretty strict rules for this event. You have to meet THEIR qualifications to fly in or take part in the competition. You can bet even at 74 the man was in excellent health and well skilled or the FAA would not have let him compete in the race. Quote
