12tribes Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 There is two genealogies of Jesus in the NT one in Matthew one in Luke, one is Joseph's line the other is Mary's line but how do we know that one is Mary's line since Mary is not mentioned? Quote Galatians 3:29(29) And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Moderators John317 Posted October 28, 2011 Moderators Posted October 28, 2011 The Bible is clear that the two genealogies are for Joseph. There is no genealogy for Mary in the Bible. Not sure how you can say that the Bible is clear about this. The Bible is actually clear that the Messiah descended from Abraham and David. Some Bible scholars believe that Matthew gives Joseph's genealogy, and Luke gives Mary's. For instance, Matt. 1: 16 says Joseph's father was named Jacob, whereas Luke 3: 23 tells us that Joseph's father was Heli. Heli may well have been Mary's father, making him Joseph's father-in-law. "Son" could refer to an adopted son, a grandson, or even an adopted relative or son-in-law. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Windsor Posted October 28, 2011 Posted October 28, 2011 This has been a controversial topic from probably the second century and I doubt we will ever know the full answer this side of Heaven. Quote Remember Adventists Online?

It is only the "scholars" that are confused because they have an agenda that is different from the Bible. As to Heli, that is only a supposition. There is no definitive proof that this is so. In fact the evidence for such a thing is just the suppositions of human thinking and not any real data. They are just reaching, I have heard this all before. No evidence whatsoever. Quote

Moderators John317 Posted October 29, 2011 Moderators Posted October 29, 2011 the Bible is clear that the two genealogies are about Joseph. So you still believe Jesus of Nazareth was not related at all to Adam, Abraham, and David? And this despite the many Bible verses which say the Messiah would be related to David? If Jesus was not related to David and to other humans, he wasn't the real Messiah, because one mark of the true Messiah was that He would be a descendent of Abraham and David. He couldn't very well have been a real human being if he wasn't related to any other human. John317 are you intimately knowledgeable about all the names on Luke's genealogical list? If you are please tell me about each of these and their connection to each other including Jesus Christ. Apparently you have knowledge that no one else has. Quote

Moderators John317 Posted October 29, 2011 Moderators Posted October 29, 2011 Define what you mean by "related to". As in the following: Romans 1:3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born [Gk ginomai, "made"] of woman, born under the law, Romans 9:5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen. Psalm 89: 35, 36 I will not lie to David. His offspring [seed] shall endure forever, his throne as long as the sun before me. NOTE: Christ's humanity was descended from David and other members of his race. 12tribes Posted October 29, 2011 Author Posted October 29, 2011 I heard someone mention it so it made me think so I studied it and asked the question here to find some answers, this is what I have found. The Bible is accurate just misunderstood, if you read the genealogies in the Bible it always goes by the male, even if it is a son in law and because Luke starts with (as was supposed) then it would be this line that Joseph is the son in law. Matthew does not use this line to refer to Christ, also in Luke is Salathiel who is also mentioned in Matthew as having a different father and 1 Chronicles 3:17 Salathiel has the same father mentioned as in Matthew therefore in Luke he is the son in law since they always put the male in the genealogies So in Luke is two son in laws, Joseph and Salathiel and two who are mentioned as son of God, Jesus (v22) and Adam Quote Galatians 3:29(29) And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Windsor Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 At the very least he had Mary's DNA in him. It would have been kind of odd if Jesus bore no physical resemblance to Mary. Why would God need to create a totally new egg from scratch? Quote Remember Adventists Online?
miz3 Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 At the very least he had Mary's DNA in him. It would have been kind of odd if Jesus bore no physical resemblance to Mary. Why would God need to create a totally new egg from scratch? That is not what the Bible says. "This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[c] because he will save his people from their sins." Matthew 1:18-21. Notice verse eighteen states it is the Holy Spirit and only the Holy Spirit that made the child. Notice verse twenty again states that it is the Holy Spirit and only the Holy Spirit that made the child. If Mary's egg had been involved it would have said so and it does not say so. It only says the Holy Spirit made Jesus Christ in Mary. How the Holy Spirit did what it did is a mystery. Mary was not involved at all except to be an incubator. Thus, Jesus Christ had no DNA from Mary or Joseph. Why, because the Bible says so. Quote
Gustave Posted November 12, 2011 Posted November 12, 2011 Jesus' genealogy is established via Mary, as the line through Joseph does not allow for "Kohen"... ...While the line via the Blessed Virgin absolutely allows for it. Jeremiah 22,30 Thus saith the LORD, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for NO MAN OF HIS SEED shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.
