The joy of His salvation

Yesterday I was in attendance to my daughter's graduation ceremony. She received her Master's of Counselling Psychology degree.

I would say it was one of the BEST graduation rites I've been to so far! It went quickly and smoothly AND the best part was that because Trinity Western University is a faith-based university the faculty was free to praise God and bring a spiritual aspect to the event.

The special award was an honorary doctorate to an ancient Chinese man who had a fascinating background. He's got a long academic history in China, Hong Kong, and London, England. This school is his first Canadian university that he's been affiliated with. He was recognized for his long work with the Chinese Christian Missionary something, work with Chinese immigrants to Canada.

I think his first degree was earned in 1947, around there. There were people in the audience who were calculating how old this man must be... He told a story of sailing in a convoy and being bombed by a U-boat in the Red Sea. Some other academic students were killed but he happened to have boarded a different ship.

His speech was longish but not at all boring. He became a Christian, in China, through his mother who converted. His family had no Bible. Their faith was sustained through the concept of "the joy of His salvation". He remembered that one life-changing Christian idea through his upbringing until adulthood until he finally was able to procure a King James Bible (which he declared was difficult for him to understand but he managed to memorize Psalm 23)

God bless this kind-hearted elderly gentleman! I love stories of how God through His Word changes a heart.

This school I believe is heavily populated with Mennonites. I LOVE those people! They have a wonderful Christian spirit!

My son married one... I shared yesterday a CD of baby and toddler Christian songs for my grandson and she was so happy to receive it. She had forgotten how "Jesus loves me" goes...

It must have been a shock to marry into an Adventist family, but we all love her to bits. That we differ on some things is obvious but it just all works out, so far.

Congrats on your daughter!!

Thanks... it was an interesting day. My ex, who has not spoken to me since he hung up on me when I told him I remarried, and I had to be together in the same room.

Daughter told me that he has gone to counselling and that he's done some homework.

I was a bit sceptical but it went fine :)

It was hard for me to face the person who with his out-of-control lifestyle hurt and fragmented his family. But with support and good boundaries in place I am willing to give him a chance.

Congratulations to your daughter and to you, Gail....a most interesting account.

Most of the graduations I have attended for my children have been at secular institutions and

to have the spiritual acknowledged is so much better.

I can relate a little to your mixed feelings about the day....that first meeting with the

ex after a number of years can be daunting...glad it passed without drama.
