Gingrich looks great from a distance. Just like Perry and Cain, a closer look will be problematic. Newt has way too much baggage.

Gingrich is a scholar and very sharp but he does have a lot of baggage. Perry has gone off his rocker. Cain's 9-9-9 would sink him in the general election if he did get the nomination.

Romney is a viable candidate. I like Huntsman too, of course he could have some dirt on him that we don't know about.

Is Perry behaving the same as he does in Texas? I mean, has he done the odd things he's doing now whilst governor.

I have never been a Perry fan but have always voted for him because the Democrats in Texas want to create (or start) a state income tax. I am not going to vote for an income tax when we don't have one. Perry has been very guilty of cronyism and if he wins the nomination (which looks unlikely) that is something he would have to deal with. He has also not done a very good job with education here. However I can't say he has done anything too radical in Texas like his proposed flat tax, eliminating departments of government or cutting legislators' pay in half.

Neither have been Perry's gaffes in the debates.

That's true, of course.

Just like when President Ford denied in his debate with Carter that the USSR was dominating and occupying Poland. I could not believe my ears. He lost a lot of votes when he made that statement. It showed bad judgment and a lack of perception.

I don't think Gingrich's accepting money from Freddie Mac showed bad judgment and I doubt he loses many votes because of it. If that's the worst thing he's done, he will be doing good.

Next thing to come up will probably be his divorce and his affair with another woman.

I wouldn't vote for one either if the state I lived in didn't have one. The problem I see with this is, if I'm not mistaken, New Hampshire didn't have one either, but the home owners had to pay through the nose for there realestate tax. I knew a couple that owned a home there and there home at the time was worth less than the one I owned in Mass and they paid nearly twice what I did. And I paid quite a bit for mine.

We do pay a bit more in property tax and our sales tax is a little higher too. Our property tax does get frozen when we turn 65 so it will never go up after that on our homestead. The state has to get money one way or the other. I don't think passing an income tax here would mean a reduction in property or sales tax. I think it would just mean the state spends more money.

We know that he was having an affair whilst perusing Bill Clinton.

Bill Clinton's crime was obstruction of justice and perjury. He lost his license to practice law over that. He was trying to bribe witnesses to change their testimony. The whole issue wasn't about sex. The Democrats wanted everyone to think it was *just* about sex. He wasn't impeached because he had an affair.

There is another very big difference between Newt and Clinton.

Clinton never completely acknowledged his past/behavior nor expressed a "turning away" from that life.

Unless we have reason to believe the conversion of Gingrich is a sham,which there has not been as far as I know,are we to accept that he is not the same man?

Or are we to keep dwelling on what he did in his past,fair game if it is continuing,or do we follow the biblical concept?

A new page on Gingrich’s campaign website is devoted to explaining past controversies.

Newt Gingrich’s campaign sought Friday to differentiate the former House speaker’s extramarital affair in the 1990s with that of Bill Clinton by noting that the former president committed perjury.

“Opponents often try to delegitimize Newt Gingrich by pointing out that he had admitted to having an extramarital affair during the impeachment of President Bill Clinton,” notes a new page on Gingrich’s campaign website that is devoted to explaining past controversies involving the Republican White House hopeful.

“What these accusers are ignoring is that the impeachment proceedings against President Clinton were due to the fact that the president committed perjury in front of a sitting federal judge, which is a felony. As the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Newt felt that he had a duty to uphold the rule of law by pursuing impeachment. He stands by that decision today.”

Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives in 1998 on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice but was acquitted by the Senate in February, 1999. Federal judge Susan Webber Wright cited Clinton for contempt in 1999, saying he gave “false, misleading and evasive” answers. He later lost his law license but was never specifically charged with perjury by the court.

Elsewhere on the page, entitled “Answering the Attacks,” Gingrich alludes broadly to “past failings.”

“Newt has been honest and forthright about the fact that he has had moments in his life that he regrets, that he has had to seek reconciliation, and go to God for forgiveness,” the page states, before noting that Gingrich and his third wife Callista now enjoy “a very strong marriage.”

Gingrich also confronts the oft-told story that he asked his first wife for a divorce while she was on her deathbed.

“This story is a vicious lie,” according to the page. “It was first reported by a left-wing magazine in the 1980s based on heresay and has survived in left-wing chat rooms on the Internet until today. It is completely false.”

The page refers and links to a column one of Gingrich’s daughters wrote earlier this year about the incident.

“The column reveals that 1) It was her mother that requested the divorce, not Newt, and it was months before the hospital visit in question; 2) Her mother was in the hospital to remove a tumor, but it was benign, and she is still alive today; 3) Newt visited the hospital for the purpose of taking his two children to see their mother, not to discuss a divorce.”

What the page doesn’t mention is that a Gingrich spokesman confirmed earlier this year that the then-congressman and his then-wife did get into an argument while he was at the hospital. In addition to his 90s-era affair and the story about his hospital visit, the site addresses 14 additional topics that could be used against Gingrich.

“Now that our campaign to rebuild the America we love is gaining momentum, those who want to see us fail are on the attack, digging through Newt’s past to try and stop us,” the page states.

The other issues are mostly on policy and politics, ranging from his statement on Paul Ryan’s Medicare plan to his work for Freddie Mac.

“See an attack that is not answered?” reads the page. “Let us know here. This page will grow as we receive more feedback to help you answer the attacks.”

The creation of such a clearinghouse indicates that Gingrich’s resurgent campaign is serious and that he and his aides hope to avoid a repeat of this week’s defensiveness over Bloomberg’s Freddie Mac story. But the sheer volume of issues, and anticipation that more will come, is a reminder of the difficulty the former speaker could have as the glare grows more intense in the weeks ahead.

Romney is a watered down democrat.It may be Romney and the one positive he cannot possibly be any worse than what we have had with Obama.
