Stan Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 Free heart surgeries Samisoni Nabilivalu Wednesday, November 16, 2011 UP to 60 heart patients in Fiji will benefit from the Sydney Adventist Hospital's Operation Open Heart (OOH) which began in Suva on Monday. Operation Open Heart provides free life-transforming cardiac surgery to underprivileged men, women, and children throughout Australia and the Pacific, South East Asia, and various third world countries. Under the OOH project, cardiac specialists and other medical staff volunteer their time and skills and also make financial contributions to the project and either take annual leave or leave without pay to participate in the program. A 63-member team of volunteers is in Suva for two weeks and will perform surgery on patients selected Fiji-wide. This year's visit is the OOH's twentieth to Fiji and over the years, 606 Fiji citizens have benefited from the program. While in Fiji, the OOH team will operate from two theatres concurrently at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH). In a statement from the Sydney Adventist Hospital, close to four tonnes of specialised cardiac supplies and equipment were flown in for the surgeries. Financial support for the visit was provided by the Ministry of Health, AusAID via the Pacific Islands Program managed by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Australian donors of OOH, Heart Kids Australia, the medical supply industry of Australia, Air Pacific and the volunteers themselves.
