Administrators Gail Posted November 20, 2011 Administrators Posted November 20, 2011 is coming up next year. There is a literary museum that is going to show films made from his stories during the year. I am currently reading Great Expectations and we have reserved the old 1946 version from our library. There was a remake in 1996 or so but the old black and white one looks just like the book. Directed by Sir David Lean!!!! We pick it up in a week or so. I'm so excited!!! No one could tell a story like Charles Dickens! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Moderators John317 Posted November 20, 2011 Moderators Posted November 20, 2011 What other books by Dickens have you read? Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Administrators Gail Posted November 20, 2011 Author Administrators Posted November 20, 2011 A Tale of Two Cities and A Christmas Carol long time ago. I have downloaded Oliver Twist and David Copperfield and someone recommended, "Pickwick Papers". Those will be next, I guess. Oliver Twist and David Copperfield I've seen movies of, but have never read. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Moderators John317 Posted November 20, 2011 Moderators Posted November 20, 2011 Pickwick Papers contains some of his best humor, but it needs to be edited, or shortened. It's the kind of book, though, that you can jump into at almost any point and enjoy. Dickens was paid by the number of words he wrote, which explains a lot about some of his books. LOL Oliver Twist needs no editing and neither does David Copperfield. You should really enjoy all of them. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. Administrators Gail Posted November 20, 2011 Author Administrators Posted November 20, 2011 I've encountered French words used in the English which I knew the meanings of since I know what they mean in French. Example- "I never assisted at a reconstruction..." Assister in french means to be witness of, not to help someone. Another one was: "Attend..." Attendre means to wait or to expect. I had never seen it in English before in the imperative. I sometimes see that in Mrs. White's work, too. In that era English and French were closer together than they are today. But apart from the charming characters (which too often reminds us of someone we know in real life), I find his work interesting in learning of the wretchedness of the working classes or the poor during the Industrial Era in England. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
