Locked into Culture?

Is there a Biblical quest that folks should be logged into the Biblical culture of the year 33 AD?

The year 1844?

The year 1910?

The year 1990?

What is Biblical authority, and what is community standards in the Bible?

Oops, I'm not clear on why 1910 and 1990 are significant. I can think of many other dates along the path of Adventism that are, but not those two.

1844 is a no brainer! :)

Perhaps a sample of this is this.

I can not find anywhere in the Bible, that seizures are anything but Devil possession.

We have found out since biblical times, that they can be controlled by medication, and perhaps they are not ALWAYS a sign of possession.

Ellen White takes about Present Truth. I support here in that, nay of her followers and her critics do not.

I do not see that 1910 and 1990 have a play although some may, there has been much thrown out there on dates. The thing is will they hold up to anything. AD 33 has a solid basis and 1844 also but many, many will refute them so it depends on where one stands, the truth will be found to stand, the rest to fail.

Religions propagating a culture that becomes trapped in the past is a natural consequence of their tendency to think and act like they already have all the answers. It makes them inflexible.

It's not a coincidence that slavery persisted the longest in the Bible Belt long after it had been given up as barbaric and immoral by most of Europe and the northern US. We're seeing the same thing happen with gay rights, today.

The slavery rules in the Bible were to prevent abuse. The US version of slavery was different from most of the rest of the world.

The Employment Standards Act, or whatever it is called in different states, was called the Master-Servant act until a few decades ago in most of the British Empire.

Actually, the Bible did not invent slavery, but sought to control it, as Stan said. The consequence of mistaking culture for inspiration of God is most easily seen when you look at the Amish. The Bible was written to a culture different to ours, and thus needs rules on thinks like keeping slaves. But, those rules are valuable in that they show us what God's attitude is, and how He would have us to treat even the least of those in our society.
