I just learned that before the Passover, there was a day set aside for the choosing of the paschal lamb. The lamb, being flawless, was displayed publicly from that day until it was slain on the Passover.

Jesus was condemned on that day. From that day until His death, he was the center of attention in Jerusalem.

The Bible says that the priests tried to avoid having him killed, "on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people." Matt.26:5, Mark 14:2

But we know that He was killed on Passover, to fulfil prophecy.

Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Club, look at the first instituted Passover, in Exodus 12.

In verse 3, the Israelites were instructed to choose the lamb on the tenth day. Then they were to keep it until the 14th day, when it would be slain.

I don't have my book, With Jesus in the Sanctuary, with me, but I found a PDF of it online. The pagination is different than the book so it might not line up directly, and this excerpt seems to be shorter than the amount of information in the book. But here it is in a nutshell:

Quote:
The Four Days of Public Display for the Paschal Lamb

Following His condemnation by the Sanhedrim on Monday, the 10th of Nisan, Christ exposed Himself publicly in the temple for the four days of His "showing forth" as the true Paschal Lamb. Then

on Friday the 14th of Nisan, "He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, . . . He is brought as a Lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth. . . . He was cut off out of the land of the living; for the transgression of My people was He stricken" (Isa 53:7, 8).

The apostle Peter clearly explained that the Paschal blood was a type of "the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot" (1 Pet 1:19).

The law required that the Paschal lamb be flawless so as to represent the impeccable Saviour, Who is "holy, harmless, undefiled, [and] separate from sinners" (Heb 7:26). Defenseless and unresisting (Isa 53:7, 8), patient and loving (Isa 53:5), harmless and submissive (Acts 8:32, 33), the Lamb was easily slaughtered.

In the Egyptian Passover the blood had been sprinkled on the door jambs and lintel of each home by the father of the family (Ex 12:4, 7, 21-23). But in the Palestinian rite the victim was

sacrificed at the Sanctuary by the house-holder or a Levite (2 Chron 30:17), and its blood splashed on the altar of burnt-offering by a priest (Pesahim 5:5, 6). "Door" suggests a gateway for going out or coming in, and illustrates the decision-making faculty of the heart, for "out of it are the issues of life" (Prov 4:23). And "so the merits of Christ must be applied to the soul" (Bible Training School April, l904).

Calling our attention to the intent of this ritual of sprinkling Ellen White cries, "Lift up Jesus before

the people. Strike the door-posts with the blood of Calvary's Lamb, and you are safe" (RH 3 Sept 1889).

Yes, this snippet is from p.224 of the document, whereas in the book I'm on p.400-something

ClubV12, Hardinge's book, With Jesus in the Sanctuary, is on sale right now at American Christian Ministries for $15.95!!!!! It's a GREAT bargain for this wonderful 560+ page book, which was the culmination of Hardinge's many years of study into the Sanctuary service.

I just bought a whole bunch for the store, having sold out of our last shipment.

Another thing I learned is that if someone couldn't for some reason (uncleanness) take part in Passover, there was a second passover service (called the "little passover") the month after. This ensured that everyone was able to participate.

You'll find that in Numbers 9:6-12

It doesn't- but for insight as to the ancient customs and how the priests and Israelites performed these things, this book is excellent. He quotes frequently from Jewish sources.

The Amazon.com write-up puts it this way:

Quote:
The subject of the "Hebrew" sanctuary is little regarded by modern Christianity. However, it is a subject that pervades both the Old and New Testaments. Sanctuary wording runs from the Garden of Eden in Genesis to the New Jerusalem in Revelation. It is truly the Spiritual Key that unlocks the knowledge of the Bible. And this book by Dr. Leslie Hardinge is the definitive work encapsulating centuries of written information on the sanctuary from Jewish scholars to the church fathers and modern writers. The details that the author brings out in this volume will help even the most gifted of modern scholars to understand the spiritual truths of the Bible and show that Christ was the pattern in heaven that the sanctuary was to be molded after. Much more than an elaborate slaughter house, the sanctuary describes in detail the work of the Messiah that was to come and after His coming, to help us understand the meaning of the whole plan of salvation. Recommend the book? It already comes with heaven's endorsement, what more can I add?

The wonderful thing about students of the bible is how God works through them to enlighten themselves and others to the gem stones found within the pages. I really appreciate those scholarly as well as the typical lay man on the street that help to bring these things to light.

Some gems are hidden deep and even when it's explained you have to do some digging yourself to really grasp it. Some are right there in front of you and you wonder how you missed it when it's explained, it seems so obvious. :)

True! I like both- ideally they should compound and enhance one another.

I'll tell you an instance where more information helped an understanding I had:

Before I did this sanctuary study, I always liked the terms "sacrifice of praise," and, "sacrifice of thanksgiving". I envisioned sacrificing of my own feelings to praise and give thanks even when I did not feel like it. That was the sacrifice on my part to God.

In the study I learned that there were genuine thank offerings through which the penitent could render praise to God. Those terms are using sanctuary language. And if I'm not confusing my offerings, they were celebratory events accompanied by a feast.

This understanding added to what I already had.

It's like how EGW comprised her history book, the Great Controversy. She took the history books of the time and with the Holy Spirit guiding, sifted through the information until she arrived at the finished product.

But by far, the light that has impacted my life the most has been what was revealed to me by His Spirit. God knows the heart and is able to custom shape Scripture to fit in a way that transforms.

Jesus was killed at the exact same time the passover lamb would have been killed--the evening BEFORE the Passover. Passover on that year started at sundown on Wed. The meal Jesus had with His disciples was NOT the Passover meal--it couldn't have been.

As for EGW being led by the Holy Spirit, that too is only an opinion as ONLY the Holy Spirit could confirm this. Another problem with this is page 433 in the GC--which is absolutly wrong. She has it that everything had been completed by 1844, even the 7th Trumpet and that the very next thing to happen would be Jesus coming in the clouds. Shoot, the time of trouble has not yet started so what she wrote was mere conjecture on her part.

So you are saying that He did not die on Nisan 14 according to the commandment?

Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Remember, the Passover started at sunset on the 14th day after the new moon after the Spring Equinox. Therefore, this actually would be the 15th Day (from sunset to sunset) according to the Jewish terms for 'day'. I do see how people could get mixed up with this, as those who edited the gospels must have too. But Jesus would not have been mixed up!

Take a look at how the Lord's Supper (the last supper) took place and you will see that they were reclining--among other things. Then take a look at what God told Israel how to eat the Passover and you will see the many problems here.

Jesus could not have been tried on the actual day of Passover for that would have meant that the lamb had already been killed.

By the way, the lamb didn't jump on the table and die of a broken heart either. Neither did Jesus. All those 'nice' songs that say He did had it wrong.

Dr. Rich,

Both you and Mr. Gibs need to take on Mr. Bob Pickle, who is an absolute pro at calendars and mathematics. He shows unequivocally how it was possible for Christ to die on Friday Passover, and very unlikely on Thursday. He also indirectly reveals how it was impossible for Him to die on Wednesday.

People are always going off on tangents, thinking they have it all figured out. Mr. Pickle has taken into account every possible variable from every possible angle, and the following are the forced results:

- The 70 weeks terminate in A.D. 34

- Christ was able to die on Friday, Nisan 14--in A.D. 31 (there was such a thing called "postponement".

- Nisan 14 was able to fall on a Friday in 31 A.D.

These links break it all down:

http://www.pickle-publishing.com/papers/harold-hoehner-70-weeks.htm

Mess with these results, and you throw everything off into a tangled mess--it has a domino effect on a lot more than what is seen on the surface.

Dr. Rich (and everyone else), please take a considerable amount of time to read the following links:

These data show that it was impossible for Christ to have died on a Wednesday (or a Thursday for that matter).

Dr. Hardinge doesn't leave us in a lurch concerning Jesus and His partaking of the passover supper:

Quote:
With Jesus in His Sanctuary-p.433- Slain "Between the evenings"

The Passover lamb was to be slaughtered "in the evening," a Hebrew idiomatic expression literally meaning "between the evening" (Ex. 12:6, margin; Pesahim 5:1,3; Zebahim 1:3; Josephus, Wars, VI:9:3). It is not possible to be dogmatic on the exact significance of this phrase, and many suggestions have been made through the centuries. But in Gesenius' discussion of the wide range of possible meaning is one which states that the lamb might be slaughtered any time after noon on the 13th, when the "evening" of the 14th began, through sunset on the 14th, when the other sunset of the "evenings" marked the commencement of the next day. If this thirty-hour period is accepted as the drift of the inspired expression, it would accommmodate both the time of Christ's participation in the Upper Room during our Thursday evening (Matt.26:17-29), and that of the Pharisees later on Friday (John 18:29). The Mishnah seems to corroborate this idea when it warns that the lamb is valid if slain by mid-day of the 13th (Pesahim 5:3, 1; see Zebahim 1:3, n.11). This thirty-hour period also provides time for the slaughtering of 240,000 lambs which Josephus remembered were slain at Passovers during the days of Christ.

Whatever conclusion we may tentatively draw, it is true that some time during the afternoon of Thursday, the 13th of Nisan, Jesus requested two of His disciples to sacrifice the lamb at the Temple, and prepare the Paschal meal for their little company. Then about sunset of Thursday, the hour when Friday, the 14th Nisan, commenced, He joined His followers in carrying out the age-old customs (Matt. 26:17-29) He had initiated more than fourteen centuries before. Our Lord thus placed the stamp of His approval on these ceremonies, and by His life and example fulfilled their intent.

Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
