ENVY: The desire for others' traits, status, abilities or situation 2. GLUTTONY: An inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires 3. LUST: An inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body. 4. WRATH: Also known as fury, rage or anger. 5. GREED: The desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. 6. PRIDE: Excessive belief in one's own abilities. 7. SLOTH: The avoidance of physical or spiritual work. The capo di tutti of TV-watching's Deadly Sins. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... aldona Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Sometimes when I see my husband watching TV I joke that we should make up a little check-list with the 10 commandments - and then he can check them off as they are broken. See how long it takes to "collect the whole set." aldona Quote www.asrc.org.au (Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Melbourne)Helping over 2000 refugees & asylum seekers each monthIMSLP/Petrucci Music LibraryThe Public Domain Music Score Library - Free Sheet Music DownloadsLooking for classical sheet music? K Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 I am not sure why those 2 bother me, but they do. I think they are the epitomy of sleezy, spoiled, brats, and I am not giving them any of my time. K Quote Proverbs 15:15 He that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.
cricket Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Yesterday I was watching Sesame Street. There was a scene in which Cookie Monster was accused of stealing a bag of cookies. What struck my fancy was this direct quote from Cookie, "I'm a glutton! Not a liar!" The rest of the story... Turns out, there is another character named "Cookie Hood" who steals from the people who have cookies and gives to the poor who have none. His crime was discovered and Cookie Monster was in the clear again for his good name. I find it fascinating that they actually addressed these sins and put a name to them. I'm intrigued that the sin of gluttony was allowed to slip by as acceptable, though. It's been about 10 years since I'd really tuned in to Sesame Street. I'm watching my infant niece these days, so I'll be tuning in more regularly and I can keep us informed! Quote
wicklunds Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 When I was a kid and in daycare every day they would turn on Sesame Street and I remember always foreboding that time. I remember crying when the music came on and they would sing Sunny Day, People are a-okay, friendly neighbors, dah dah dah dee dee dee, can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street? Yuck!! I didnt want to be in the same room as the tv. and your comments make me wonder if that was why. Maybe God was protecting me from the unholy, cultural influences on that program. But I did like the cartoons and now that I watch those, I think, it is a miracle that I am not a serial-murderer with the violence on those things. It is a sad shame what we subject our impressionable children to at such a tender age. Truly reprehensible!!! Quote It is a backsliding church that lessens the distance between itself and the Papacy. {ST, February 19, 1894 par. 4}
Administrators Gail Posted April 22, 2005 Administrators Posted April 22, 2005 You said it... I was also raised on Bugs Bunny and <egad> Roadrunner and Boris and Natasha (Bullwinkle). It's amazing that I am so anti-agression as I am <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Nowadays when I catch one on TV (I don't have cable, myself) I shake my head at what we used to watch. They are still comical and have nowheres NEAR the disrespectful attitude of today's cartoons, but I still wonder at God's grace that I, after having been filled with that culture as a child, desire Him But perhaps it's because I was exposed to that that I do... Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

Moderators Nan Posted April 23, 2005 Moderators Posted April 23, 2005 A general reply - another of TV's sins - or ours - How many unreal expectations does TV implant into our brains? I have seen a list of humorous ones that include always being able to get a carpark downtown if you are the TV hero. But do we expect to work out relationship problems in the space of a TV program ? And I have heard it said that the concentration span of the TV generation is the time between commercial breaks. Quote
