Woody Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 This visitor stopped by and I honestly don't know what kind of bird it is. And being color blind does not help me to figure it out. Can you help me Identify it? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Members phkrause Posted December 19, 2011 Members Posted December 19, 2011 It resembles a nuthatch, but its not. Also has the markings of a woodpecker. I'm searching my bird books, but have not as of yet come across anything that looks exactly like it. So be patient my friend. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Members phkrause Posted December 19, 2011 Members Posted December 19, 2011 It looks like it could be a "Northern Flicker"? Still searching. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Members phkrause Posted December 19, 2011 Members Posted December 19, 2011 Here's a link to one. Check it out. The beak seems to match, but some of the markings are debatible. http://www.utahbirds.org/birdsofutah/BirdsL-R/NorthernFlicker.htm Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Members phkrause Posted December 19, 2011 Members Posted December 19, 2011 Its that little red patch on his back that's missing, that make me wonder. I'm still looking. :) Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Members phkrause Posted December 19, 2011 Members Posted December 19, 2011 Here ya go: http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Northern_flicker/id This looks like it, according to my bird book its a "Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker. But very strange, its says that the one you've taken a picture of is in the east and the red one is in the northwest?? Oh well that's life. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Woody Posted December 19, 2011 Author Posted December 19, 2011 How COOL. So it's a Norther Flicker. Thanks for all your work guys. Much appreciated. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Woody Posted December 19, 2011 Author Posted December 19, 2011 Yes dgrimm. I clicked it to be a favorite so I can look at it again. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Administrators Gail Posted December 19, 2011 Administrators Posted December 19, 2011 Good for you! I came into this late in the game but I knew it was a Flicker. We have those, too. Nice markings! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Gail Posted December 19, 2011 Administrators Posted December 19, 2011 You are really enjoying your surroundings, aren't you, Woody? Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Dottie Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 I found that in the east it is called a "Yellow-shafted flicker' and in the west it is called a 'Red-shafted flicker." Does that clarify? Quote
Woody Posted December 20, 2011 Author Posted December 20, 2011 Thanks ALL. This has been interesting. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
LifeHiscost Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 Thanks ALL. This has been interesting. Much more interesting than the turkey's that we (wife and I) usually keep company with in our area. That's O.K. Are there any turkeys where you frequent? God blesses! Quote Lift Jesus up!!

Administrators Gail Posted December 20, 2011 Administrators Posted December 20, 2011 There go the turkeys! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Gail Posted December 20, 2011 Administrators Posted December 20, 2011 And any stray kids or dogs... Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Gail Posted December 21, 2011 Administrators Posted December 21, 2011 GAIL STRAY kid???? you mean goats??? Uh, no. I mean CHILDREN. They will kill adults, too, but when they are hungry they will pick off a child. On Vancouver Island there are sometimes sightings near school yards and everybody has to watch out until that cougar is found and either relocated or killed. We have lots of cougars in B.C. They even used to be in our area, where I live, but you still hear tell of them across the river from us. I think with cougars the thing to do is to NOT turn your back on one, but to try to make yourself look really big, then back up until you can get away. With bears you make a lot of noise. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Administrators Naomi Posted December 21, 2011 Administrators Posted December 21, 2011 I only just now stumbled upon this thread ... it's refreshingly interesting and enjoyable. Thanks all Quote If your dreams are not big enough to scare you, they are not big enough for God
Overaged Posted December 23, 2011 Posted December 23, 2011 Alright! How does a scrawny dude like me make himself "look big" to a cougar should I ever run into one? We have them in the Kananaskis and mountains here in Alberta Quote "People [rarely] see...the bright light which is in the clouds..." (Job 37:21)"I cannot know why suddenly the stormshould rage so fiercely round me in it's wrathBut this I know: God watches all my pathAnd I can trust""God helps us to draw strength from the storm" - OveragedFaith makes things possible; it does not make them easy, Steps To Christ
