____the Lindy Chamberlain story? And made up your mind different than this.

Quote:

New Azaria Chamberlain inquest to focus on dingo

Michael Coggan reported this story on Monday December 19, 2011 08:14:00

PETER CAVE: The barrister who wrote the definitive book about the 1980 disappearance of baby Azaria Chamberlain says it's about time the dingo was officially blamed.

Thirty one years after the event the Northern Territory coroner has agreed to re-open a coronial inquiry.

No new witnesses will be called but a legal team representing Michael Chamberlain and his former wife Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton is preparing to convince the coroner to overturn the official record that shows the cause of death remains 'unknown'.

Author John Bryson says the fact the new inquest is going ahead shows the legal establishment is softening its hard line against the Chamberlains.

Michael Coggan reports from Darwin.

MICHAEL COGGAN: It's the case that divided a nation - between those who didn't believe the dingo took the baby and those who did.

The cause of Azaria Chamberlain's death is still officially recorded as 'unknown' because the third coronial inquest in 1995 delivered an 'open' finding.

But now Michael Chamberlain and his former wife Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton have a chance to change the official record to show that a dingo killed their baby daughter in the shadow of Uluru in 1980.

The Northern Territory coroner Elizabeth Morris yesterday officially confirmed she will hold a fourth inquest starting on the 24th of February next year.

Michael Chamberlain.

MICHAEL CHAMBERLAIN: Yeah, it's been 31 years now and I just hope that, well I'm sure this time it will be the ultimate verdict.

MICHAEL COGGAN: The new inquest won't hear from any witnesses but evidence, including previous statements, investigations and reports will be tendered and submissions made on that evidence.

A year ago the legal team representing the Chamberlains wrote to the coroner requesting a new inquest. They have cited ten serious dingo attacks on people since 1980 - two of them fatal - as new evidence.

Michael Chamberlain says dingoes continue to pose a risk to children in camping areas.

Adding fuel to the Chamberlain's argument there have been nine reported cases of dingoes killing domestic dogs in the Darwin region over the past six months.

Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife Service director Brett Easton says dingoes at campgrounds are well managed but it is possible a dingo could kill a baby.

BRETT EASTON: Well, I suppose it is hard to be definitive about that Michael but the dingo, it is a wild animal. It's an opportunistic predator and you know, it is probably not unreasonable that if an opportunity presented itself, that it could make off with a small prey.

MICHAEL COGGAN: The author of the book 'Evil Angels' barrister John Bryson says the new inquest is an opportunity to set the record straight after the last one failed to follow the lead set by the Royal Commission that exonerated the Chamberlains.

JOHN BRYSON: I think it is time really for it to be at an end. The people involved have been through enough.

MICHAEL COGGAN: Mr Bryson says the fact the coroner has decided to re-open the inquest shows the Northern Territory legal establishment has softened the hard line it's taken against the Chamberlains in the past.

JOHN BRYSON: It has not been yet put to bed and so we hope that this coroner will.

PETER CAVE: Author of 'Evil Angels' John Bryson ending that report from Michael Coggan in Darwin.

God blesses! peace

That was a very interesting case. I remember thinking at the time, it seems that when an SDA does something to help there is never a mention of affiliation, but let it be something like this and there is no lack of who it is. At least here in the US we have not heard of an apology, I wonder if there has been one in down under?

Lindy and Michael received some monetary compensation from the government in the Northern Territory but I cannot recall any apology.

It has taken a terrible toll in terms of their broken marriage - both married to others now, I think Lindy's husband is from California - and the strain on their boys.

"Dingo jokes" proliferated for a long time.

In the years since, a 9 year old boy was killed by dingos on Fraser Island in Queensland and there have been other attacks, showing that what happened to Azaria

was not beyond feasible.

I remember that interview, even where I was at the time. She was a class act.

If I'm not mistaken, it was another killing by dingos that made them recheck that case?? And finally got her freed?
