olger Posted December 27, 2011 Author Posted December 27, 2011 Goin to the international GYC meeting in the George Brown Center. Liz, you're from Texas. What do we look for in Houston and what do we avoid? More importantly, will we need to take cowboy hats and woolly chaps? Quote "Please don't feed the drama queens.."
Administrators Naomi Posted December 27, 2011 Administrators Posted December 27, 2011 Are you going to the GYC conference? Quote If your dreams are not big enough to scare you, they are not big enough for God
Kountzer Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Temps been in the 40s the last few days, & rainy. I've owned one cowboy hat in my lifetime, but I was living in California at the time. IOWs, you won't really need one or boots, but if you have both it would look good. It costs like $140.00 dollars to get in that place for this event. That counts me out. I only just found out about it a few days ago. It has not been announced by my conference or church at all. I found out by accidentlly surfing up on it on the internet. Houston is spread out. I'm sure you are staying at a nice hotel that has everything you need. I live & work on the North side of town. I seldom go downtown here lately. I've been hearing about OWS stuff going on down there on the news, and I stayed away. That stuff was on the West side of downtown, and the George R Brown Center is on the East side, so it should not be a problem. I haven't heard anymore about that type stuff lately. Houston is about like anywhere else in late 2011/2012. There's good there's bad. Prayer helps anywhere. Enjoy yourself. Kountzer Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Hey olger, I just tried to pm you, but I couldn't. Send me a email at: kountzer@hotmail.com. I'd like to me up with you if that is okay. My job has been off since last Thursday @ 1pm, for xmas. Tomorrow is going to be crazy! It is a public office though, (Dmv). If I get the time I may go down to the GRB and take pictures. I don't know when though. Quote I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs. Frederick Douglass
Kountzer Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Chamber of Commerce weather here today. Crisp temperatures, hi about 62, no rain, not a cloud in the sky. This is definitely the best time to visit Houston. Quote I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs. Frederick Douglass
Liz Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Goin to the international GYC meeting in the George Brown Center. Liz, you're from Texas. What do we look for in Houston and what do we avoid? More importantly, will we need to take cowboy hats and woolly chaps? Sorry I'm on the other side of Texas, it's a big state. I hope you have a great time though. It would be neat if you and Kountzer can meet up. P.S. Cowboys here don't really wear "cowboy hats" they wear ball caps, the people who wear cowboy hats are usually truckers. Kountzer Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 I was down there at Discovery Green last night, which is the park in front of the GRB convention center. Nice festive atmosphere. They had ice skating, a local latin jazz band playing music. I shook hands and spoke with Jim Gilley the president of 3ABN. You gotta be careful where you park down there. Park in the wrong place and they will tow you in no time. Lots going on here adventist wise the next few days: the end of the year, the new year, prayer meeting, communion. I got my dvr set up to record gyc. Quote I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs. Frederick Douglass
Administrators Gail Posted December 28, 2011 Administrators Posted December 28, 2011 Am looking forward to more good sermons! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Kountzer Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 I went to GYC. Wow. Nice. I didn't hear the sermon, but I could of sat down and checked it out. Instead I went the the exhibition area. I saw a lot of nice exhibits. I talked to a lot of well known adventist preachers. I saw Pastor David Gates. I saw and took a picture of Pastor Luis Torres. I saw Elder Jim Gilley of 3ABN again. If I get a chance I will go back. Quote I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs. Frederick Douglass
olger Posted December 30, 2011 Author Posted December 30, 2011 It's been great. We are hanging out with Jim Gilley's daughter and son-in-law. Good friends - kind of like family. Quote "Please don't feed the drama queens.."

Kountzer Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 I got a chance to talk a bit more with Elder Gilley about 3abn and other stuff. Nice guy. He's very friendly. I spoke briefly with Doug Batcherlor & I took a picture of him. I also spoke briefly with Stephen Bohr & I took another picture with him. I spoke to Ivor Meyers, I saw Jim Rafftery but I didn't get a chance to talk to him. If I were there all day I'd have more stories to tell. This is not bad though. We've been putting in 9 hours a day at work, then in the evening I've been heading over that way. Quote I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs. Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted December 30, 2011 Moderators Posted December 30, 2011 I agree, LynnDel. From what I've heard on other websites, I think this is a grass-roots youth movement [sDA] of some type. I don't think it's sponsored or organized by "the brethren" but it's approved by our church organization. That's all I can figure out. Any additional info on this will be appreciated. I've voiced what I think of this group before on this forum. Had best not state it again as I might be viewed as promoting negativity. They are what they are. For many years I watched GYC on 3abn before 3abn switched satellites. I observed some concerns. And I expressed them at that time. And I still have the same concerns. olger Posted December 31, 2011 Author Posted December 31, 2011 Yeah I'm the one on the left, Jeannie. The girl is just someone I paid to take a picture with me.. G (actually it's my wife of 29-years). Quote "Please don't feed the drama queens.."
olger Posted December 31, 2011 Author Posted December 31, 2011 I keep hearing about GYC, but no one has said a word about what it is. LD Hi LD, GYC was started by a group of Adventist students who give Bible studies. They finally decided to have a meeting to pray with & encourage one another (California 2002). From there it grew to an annual meeting that now has about 10,000 on Sabbath. It is run by young people and provides a climate to network together, and help take the Three Angels' messages to the world. I am much inspired by these young people. The founders were Israel Ramos, Justin Kim, and Andrea Oliver. Other young folks who helped get the ball rolling were Steve Waterbrook, Tim Arwakara, Chelsey Jourdan, and Jeffery Rosario. My son is helping to start a chapter in our state. Quote "Please don't feed the drama queens.."
Kountzer Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 Unusual confluence of the secular and spiritual in the GRB area Thursday night. I didn't go down that way tonight. Parking was almost non existent due to the NBA game between the Rockets and the SA Spurs. As I walked down the street I saw groups of people with Houston rockets jerseys on, and other groups wearing white gyc badges. One group talking about the game, then all of the sudden you walk into the convention center you are in the middle of a sermon. That part of town is great for secular good times. Lots of bars, night clubs, house of blues, nba games at the toyota center, mlb baseball games at minute made park. They're always booking this type of convention or that at the grb. Lots of gun shows. Occassionally my wife gets good tickets to games from her job. Otherwise i don't venture that way. This was probably the best adventist convocation in houston I know of. There have been some local sda meetings in town that were close, but they were not national or international in scope. Who knows? maybe they will have a GC here. The next one is in San Antonio. It is just as hot and humid in SA as it is here. I met some nice people. I may meet more tomorrow. As for the rest, thank the Lord for region conferences, and region conference churches. Moderators LynnDel Posted December 31, 2011 Moderators Posted December 31, 2011 Thanks for the info, olger. What does GYC stand for? LD Quote LD
Kountzer Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 We went back to GYC. Good discussion then a good sermon by Dwight Nelson. Among other things he talked about tearing down walls. Okay, okay I thank the Lord for all conferences & churches. Resting up, planning to go back this afternoon & evening. If parking can be found. The city of Houston is doing a big new year's celebration in the park right in from of the convention center. Quote I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs.
