Gibs Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Yes it is too true and TRUE Christians should abhor TV and not be of the world although we are in the world we must be separte from it. That really sets one out like a sore thumb. True Christians are hated now and it will get a lot worse. You know they hated Jesus Christ and crucified Him. Then all the Apostles were Martyred except John and he was excilled to the isle of patmos. Then the Martydon really took off again in the dark ages and we are now entering the darkest time of all. Hear EGW on that tune, "The coming of the bridegroom was at midnight--the darkest hour. So the coming of Christ will take place in the darkest period of this earth's history. The days of Noah and Lot pictured the condition of the world just before the coming of the Son of man. The Scriptures pointing forward to this time declare that Satan will work with all power and "with all deceivableness of unrighteousness." 2 Thessalonians 2:9, 10. His working is plainly revealed by the rapidly increasing darkness, the multitudinous errors, heresies, and delusions of these last days. Not only is Satan leading the world captive, but his deceptions are leavening the professed churches of our Lord Jesus Christ. The great apostasy will develop into darkness deep as midnight, impenetrable as sackcloth of hair. To God's people it will be a night of trial, a night of weeping, a night of persecution for the truth's sake. But out of that night of darkness God's light will shine." {COL 414.3} That is happining now! 1Jo 4:4 ¶ Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. I mean, whatever you wnat to watch on TV, you can get here on the internet and more! Since you set the standard of what a "TRUE Christian" is, what makes you different? Just askin'... Gibs Posted January 2, 2012 Posted January 2, 2012 Hamilton, You can't get nothing but smut on the tv, even the weather channel is adorned with porno at times. I get my weather here on the net and no porn. I get most of my news from www.rense.com/ and you have found an honest Christian newsman. Sometimes I go to www.rumormillnews.com/ and it is OK but Rense is the best. I do a lot of emails and get in a lot of emails, all from true and concerned Christians. I go to several websites like this one of clubadventist and do witnessing on them. I buy things from certain places that sell the things I need and want of the quality and price that is good and right. I don't get [censored] here on the internet as it isn't in my face, I would have to know the sites to go to get it and I don't know of any and am not looking to find any. There is tons of excellent information to be had here on any subject and all about any preacher out there, you can find out what he preaches and see who he is of. All these media could be used for good but with TV it is smut to no end wherever and whatever channel you go to. The history channel at times is informative and so is national geographic but the service my wife has now don't have N.G. and she don't care for the History one. She is in love with the game shows but I don't watch any of it. I'm different because I have no part in this worldly [censored] that is for entertainment for the masses today. When I don't have nothing to do I know where to go on the internet to pick up a good message being preached. A neighbor that gets 3abn says there is some good ones once in awhile there. I have several on shortwave radio that are excellent and I usually hear about 3 hours a day from that media. Can you not see why I have a different see of things? Besides that I'm an old timer, I've seen purer days. 1Jo 4:4 ¶ Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. Moderators Bravus Posted January 3, 2012 Moderators Posted January 3, 2012 Gibs and I are in general agreement on TV, though from quite different perspectives. We certainly don't have one at our place, and never have. I've posted about this here before, a number of times. Back on topic, though, and I agree with Stan that the guy is talking a lot of sense. I have to admit I winced a couple of times - I have a lot of striped shirts that I wear over jeans with the tails out! I know it's an outdated look, but it's quite slimming... and I want to keep wearing jeans to work! My kids - well, young ladies now, I guess - have identified my 'teacher voice', and said I do sound different when I'm teaching than in conversation. Not so surprising, though, since in conversation I'd usually rather listen than talk, and just toss in a question or an idea now and then. I do some of that in the classroom, too, but sometimes ideas need explaining when people encounter them for the first time. Anyway, I'm not an evangelist, and I should also avoid making it all about me! Modelling the *style* of Christian media on the *style* of successful secular media, which of course having completely different *content* and *substance* makes a lot of sense. Hearing the gospel is in itself challenging for people: why add the extra challenge of a whole unfamiliar presentation style? Especially when that style feels very contrived and pretentious... Jesus' personal style was natural and human. Quote Truth is important
Moderators Bravus Posted January 3, 2012 Moderators Posted January 3, 2012 I should add that a point of departure for me from Gibs is that I think that, although I'm not a consumer of Christian TV, it's still worth doing. People need the gospel, and we need to get it to them where they are, not where we are. 'Becoming all things to all people that by all means we might win some' is Biblical. Quote Truth is important
Stan Posted January 3, 2012 Author Posted January 3, 2012 Was hoping someone else would pick this up Quote: OFFENDER #1: If you talk in a different voice when the camera is turned on: Everywhere else on television we see reality. Love it or hate it, reality programming has left an indelible mark on the industry. So when you appear on your program with your “classic TV voice” it sticks out like a sore thumb. You know who I’m talking about. This is the same to me as preaching... I believe TV is there for one purpose... that is to preach the good news. and I don't mean just Sunday morning Adventist TV. Imagine if we did one of these for First Nations or Native Americans. regarding alcohol and a host of other issues REAL ISSUES Quote If you receive benefit to being here please help out with expenses. https://www.paypal.me/clubadventist Administrator of a few websites like https://adventistdating.com
fccool Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 There's very little quality Christian TV out there. For some reason Christian decided that putting bunch of cameras in Churches and videotaping the sermons would somehow pass for decent television. There's one thing that Christians, and especially Adventists should learn about television. TV is not Radio. If you can black out the Picture, and it would not make much difference, then there's no point in spending all of the effort to show the heads talking. Unfortunately, 90% ++ of Christian television turns out to be such. It's really an "enhanced radio" programming. If the goal is to reach the World with Christian message, then 3ABN equivalent of reaching the world would be hoping that people will just walk into your church out of boredom or curiosity and sit through a series of sermons. Most likely not going to happen, thus should not be called 3ABN, but ACMTV - Adventist Church Membership TV. If the mission of 3ABN is to provide fitting programming to their members, then I think they are going pretty good job. If their mission is to reach the masses with the message... not so good. I think it's a pity, because Adventism is loaded with great information potential that is not limited to "Preaching to the Choir" programming. There's health, there's Children stories and education, there's religious freedom and understanding, great international communities that can produce World/Travel related content. It's really an attention game. I can guarantee you that Adventists at large watch more non-Adventist TV than they do Adventist one. Adventism programming provides no viable alternatives for programming such as Sitcoms, Films, Game Shows and etc... Overall, Christian, and especially Adventist is cheap. Anyone can put a couple of cameras in front of talking heads and have a broadcast. Good TV takes talent, time and imagination. Quote

fccool Posted January 3, 2012 Posted January 3, 2012 Sure, you've posted it before in similar discussions. I'm certainly not saying that there are no attempts to make quality films/programming. I've made some attempts myself . What I'm saying is that 90% ++ of it is not much different than what you already see or seen Saturday morning in church... content-wise. Quote
