Hydraulics is a great example, and I guess it's like the various other kinds of simple machines, in that it allows us to magnify a force and move its effect from place to place. However it allowed all the knowledge acquired in a life time to be transmitted to the next generation and not just in a few hand-written manuscripts but in mass production so that one man's research would be available to the masses in following generations.
