Great question, Ger.

Hydraulics is a great example, and I guess it's like the various other kinds of simple machines, in that it allows us to magnify a force and move its effect from place to place.

Radio in all its forms is my nomination - a newer one, but hugely important in life now.

vaccines, insulin and insulin pumps. I'm sure there are lots of things in the medical community that is extremely important to those whose lives depend on them, from equipment to treatments.

I think there are plenty of things that could be thrown into this category,

but there are two that really stood out and propelled our civilization forward

1) Steam engine

2) Internal Combustion engine that runs on petro-fuel

I don't think we fully grasp or appreciate what those two have done and still doing for us.

I like to observe how many of man's invention mimic something in nature

It seems like "sliced bread" hung on to its revered spot for a long time.

I don't see the computer chip mentioned yet. This has to be in the top 10, imo.

Indeed! It allowed Luther to turn out Bibles faster than the Pope could burn them.

However it allowed all the knowledge acquired in a life time to be transmitted to the next generation and not just in a few hand-written manuscripts but in mass production so that one man's research would be available to the masses in following generations.

The printing press probably deserves credit for most of the inventions and scientific progress that has happened since it was invented.

I was thinking about that now for a few days and was going to post the printing press but you beat me to it. For me being a printer, I have always felt, if not for the pp there would be no Bible, books, etc.

The inventions of man and Satan are not so good as those things deplete and destroy and polute. The way God set in the Garden and didn't need no more evil inventions.

So what is the greatest invention? Probably the greates and most loved lie men will take up and fight for.

I long for a better world where God who sees the end from the beginning is the engineer.

And the Internet?

All the ones mentioned are very good.

Since it just our own opinion, here is my opinion list.

1. The Cross----maybe this does not count since it is God's idea and not man's idea.

Using only human ideas.

1. The Printing Press.

2. The American Constitution/Declaration of Independence

3. Gun Powder.

4. The Steam Engine.

5. The Transistor.

6. The Electric Light.

I suspect that you will find more men in agreement with this issue than women. (Men have much more to be thankful about.)
