This is an opportunity to express your grief over your GPS.

Today my GPS fell off it's pedistal and knocked my gear shift into neutral. At first I didn't realize it had gone into neutral. But when I needed control - I had none. And it took me awhile to figure out what was going on. This was dangerous.

Praise God he kept me safe. Okay - truth be known - I am not sure if the GPS did it or my reaching for it as it was falling did the deed.

So anyways - after having that anger at that GPS I wanted a place for others who likewise have suffered at the hands of a GPS - to support one another.

My GPS does not even know where I live. After SO many trips home - it still thinks I live somewhere else and has to "recalulate" all the time.

It also sends me on wild goose chases. When I head south to go home - it always sends me down on a non-existant road.

With the GPS - one just has to learn when the chances are best to just IGNORE the contraption.

May we be one so that the world may be won.

So far I have made it through life without a GPS.

One friend used to call his gadget Delilah because it was continually leading

him astray (I may have mentioned that somewhere previously).

So Woody...while I sympathize with your loss, I do want to reassure you that there is life after - and before - a GPS :)

Yes GPSs don't always take you where your wanting to go. But luckily the GPS within me always seems to have a sense when I'm going in the wrong direction.

My GPS has taken me to some places that would have taken me forever to find by myself. It has also been a source of grief when it tells me, "you are now entering an area where turn by turn guidance cannot be provided," when I need it most. My car is now 4 yrs old and I haven't updated the maps because I'm loathe to part with $200.

'Gidgett' GPS "Turn down this street.."

(Gerry misses turn..doesn't like that street...)

GPS "Turn back in 100 yards."

Gerry "No I will get the next street heading south."

GPS "TURN BACK you moron."

Gerry "Nope - keeps driving..

"Sigh! Recalculating route.."

"Please don't feed the drama queens.."

I must say that my GPS has helped me much more than it has caused me grief. I did update the thing. Strange thing, roads appear and disappear.

A few years ago in San Diego the Sam's Club wasn't recognized by my GPS. It always tried to take me off on a street which did not exist. One Sunday morning I arrived early and the parking lot was empty. The obnoxious lady continued to tell me to turn around and go back. So I continued to turn in wide circles ... I promise "she" appeared to take on a personality.

{then the men in white coats came and took me away}

Oh well, I am easily entertained.

My family got a GPS a few years ago to help us around on a trip to Washington, D.C. Some parts were difficult to navigate even with a GPS, and one wrong turn brought us into the parking lot of the Pentagon, with no way out that we could see but a very long stretch of cars. Moving very slowly. After sitting in line for a while a man rolled down his window and called out something like, "Do you work here?" I guess lost tourists are a common occurrence there. The next lane over, which was empty but we did not know where it went, was the exit lane. "Get the hell out of here!" he shouted.

We replaced that GPS recently because it had jumped too many times and the touchscreen was very difficult to use. We were going to visit relatives for Christmas at my cousin's house. The new GPS was working well until it took us on a road that was not on our old route. It then wanted us to turn on a one-lane gravel road lined by a forest and a fence. My dad was skeptical about this change of plans, but my mom suggested that this road might connect to the one we would normally be on. A hundred meters down the road, past a curve, we came to a gate and my dad had to back out the whole way.

Another time, someone switched the map files in the GPS so it brought us to an abandoned lot instead of the hotel, and they shot my wife and I. I managed to survive and crawl miles down the road where I met a trucker to whom I uttered my dying words, "Girls can't eat 10 pizzas."

Edit: To clarify, only one of these situations did not happen to me specifically...

This has made me think that not all GPSes are alike...

My car came with one and I have no clue as to which make it is. But it has never let me down. I can upgrade the card every so often to keep things current.

Once I went on an hour's drive in pitch black of night through back roads to Bellingham airport. Had no clue where I was but I just followed the GPS. It got me there with 5 minutes to spare.

If you are able to it is not a bad idea to buy a good street atlas. Use the atlas to study the area you will be driving around in. Add what you learn from the atlas to the information the gps gives. GPS are not 100% accurate. By far, the best location computer ever created is the human mind, or brain.

I hate to make confessions - but here goes:

I like my GPS because on the way home - I get lonely. And hearing a lovely woman's voice helps uplift my spirits. So I often just turn it on so that I can hear her lovely voice.

Please now - no condemnations for Woody's confession. Remember this is private - don't tell anyone else.

Gee Woody, you need a little variety. Why don't you try calling Richard sometime, he's got a really nice voice too. And he's good with directions.

Okay, I not tell anyone else. But, it's refreshing to know a man who will allow a woman tell him which direction to drive.
