flameon88 Posted January 8, 2012 Posted January 8, 2012 Hi, I've been asked a question about new age music recently. New age movement is probably not something we would approve of, but how about new age music, like that of kevin kern, which is light and instrumental? Any good reasons to or not to listen to it? either personally, scientifically, biblically or from the SOP? thanks! :) Quote
Administrators Naomi Posted January 8, 2012 Administrators Posted January 8, 2012 Perhaps I am oversimplifying the issue, however there are some very beautiful instrumentals out there "Enchanted Garden" is very lovely. I think it is what you make it. Personally I prefer gospel ... but appreciate some very nice music. New Age ... Duh, I had no idea that it is New Age. LOL Quote If your dreams are not big enough to scare you, they are not big enough for God
Administrators Gail Posted January 8, 2012 Administrators Posted January 8, 2012 That is the problem... how does one know? I've heard some harp music that has been touted as New Age. All I hear is harp... I guess if it helps you into a meditative mode (and by meditative I mean in the New Age sense) it might be deemed such. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Members phkrause Posted January 8, 2012 Members Posted January 8, 2012 It comes down to how much you let the music influence you. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
Administrators Gail Posted January 8, 2012 Administrators Posted January 8, 2012 And it is true- any music will influence you (wish Aldona was here right now) It might be better said that it comes down to which direction the music influences you Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
flameon88 Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 what would it mean by meditative mode in the new age sense. Pardon me, for I live in Asia, where New Age Spiritualism is not so pervasive, yet. Quote
flameon88 Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 yes, actually, personally, i like these kind of music, but i do not have them on my computer. My friend was introducing them to me, and when I listened to it, there were the sounds of nature, and soft piano music. However, the Adventist in me felt a little uncomfortable. And after googling on the artist involved, i realised it was New Age Music, and New Age is probably not something I am comfortable with. Just thinking of what to advice my friend with. and other people in the future. Quote
flameon88 Posted January 9, 2012 Author Posted January 9, 2012 if purely for relaxation, would it be any wrong? such as listening to secular music in instrumental form (in case where you do not the song with lyrics, hence unable to be influenced by thought of the lyrics). Quote
Gibs Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Most of the "new age music" raises the lower base passions which is what the world loves and sees no harm in it. As a matter of fact they call it "love". Heavenly music is what we need and want, draws the heart and mind and spirit together with His Spirit and Oneness in Him. Most music today is better not heard. It does not elevate it debases. 1Jo 4:4 ¶ Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. Quote A Freeman In Jesus Christ
Stan Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 As does Country Music, it manipulates the listen into taking away values Quote If you receive benefit to being here please help out with expenses. https://www.paypal.me/clubadventist Administrator of a few websites like https://adventistdating.com Â

Aliensanctuary Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 New Age music, like spa music, kind of flows, with less structure than other kinds of music. I think Adventist Radio should only play Del Delker singing her favorite hymns, 24-7, in order to maintain the purity of SDA traditions. Maybe add a little rousing marching band music to wake everybody up from time to time. Quote The Parable of the Lamb and the Pigpen https://www.createspace.com/3401451Â
Moderators Bravus Posted January 10, 2012 Moderators Posted January 10, 2012 God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and a sound mind. If we have to fear all music that is not the music we grew up with... that's a sad (and unscriptural) way to live. Quote Truth is important
Woody Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 I am not aware of any style of music that the Bible talks against. I think we need to use the same criteria that we use for our lives that we do for our music. And that way - it depends upon the person and how they react to the music. It will be different for each person. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology. Â
