Moderators lazarus Posted January 30, 2012 Moderators Posted January 30, 2012 I think we should just be exited that we got a mention. What do they say about any publicity? How does 20 sec on Family Guy compare with the distribution of the Great Controversy? Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. I find it interesting that Mormons, who have about the same number of members as SDA church, are better recognized and acknowledged than SDA. Generally, people know very little about SDA church. Administrators Naomi Posted January 31, 2012 Administrators Posted January 31, 2012 I checked with my son who used to work at family guy, and have asked him to find the story behind the story. Good, would be interesting to know the who, why, etc. I am not sure that it shows us in a good light. There you go ....... Thank you Stan Quote: I find it interesting that Mormons, who have about the same number of members as SDA church, are better recognized and acknowledged than SDA. Focol I think it proably has a lot to do with what area of the world you are living. And, the Mormons have had a lot of news exposure the past few years. Kountzer Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 I just saw this video on facebook. I haven't watched it here, but i know it is the same video. CHURCH dgrimm60 I do agree dgrimm, we'd be supprised that we are a little better known than some give us credit for, but fccool is right. For the size church we are we're not that well known. Moderators Bravus Posted January 31, 2012 Moderators Posted January 31, 2012 I think the point being satirised is that the churches are sooo close on so many doctrinal issues that a small (to an outsider without our detailed theologies on the point) difference being such a huge deal is humorous. Quote Truth is important
Dr. Rich Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 As your quote states, truth is important. When one is off only one degree of a circle, they are also 359 degrees off. Just a bit of a lie amoung truth makes the whole thing a lie. That is why it is important not to be deceived by the words of anyone else and you can only trust the words of Jesus to be the truth. Page 433 of the GC shows what can happen when the whole truth is not told. Many now believe that Jesus can come at any time, yet reading all of chapter 11 of Revelation shows us that many things have to happen before the ark of the covenant in the temple in heaven is shown to prove those being judged what it is they are being measured by. If one just read that page alone, they would get the same idea EGW had, that everything had been done and the only thing left to happen is Jesus coming in the clouds. Now, because many would be bondservants have fallen for this mistake, they too are believing a lie and are in great danger of being among those found in Rev. 21:8, 27 and Rev. 22:15. (Also see Rev. 2:18-26) Quote
Moderators Bravus Posted February 2, 2012 Moderators Posted February 2, 2012 I think you may have mistaken my speculation about the thinking of the Family Guy writers for my own view... Quote Truth is important
GreatLakesGramma Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 I grew up Methodist. They do NOT believe all the same things as Adventists. They believe in immortality of the soul and eternally burning hellfire. I never heard of being born again or that Jesus was going to come again in all my years in the Methodist church either. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. Lewis
BobRyan Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Indeed they do not believe all the same things. But in that skit the Methodist only says that he Loves the Lord and praises him in worship on Sundays. The SDA then claims the same things - only that he worship on Sabbath instead. They were pretty careful not to include all the teachings of the Methodists. What is more - they were careful to "select Methodists" - since in fact Ellen White was a united Methodist, and our organizational structure is like the Methodists - so also our rejection of the errors of Calvinism - rejection of predestination and once-saved-always-saved etc. in Christ, Bob Quote John 8:32 - The Truth will make you free“The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin." COL 316.

Generally, people know very little about SDA church. I agree - it is much easier to find someone who will say "Adventist? What is an Adventist" then to find someone who will say "Mormon? Never heard of them". in Christ, Bob Quote John 8:32 - The Truth will make you free“The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin." COL 316.
Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted February 3, 2012 Administrators Posted February 3, 2012 I think y'all are over analyzing this bit of satirical humor, and missing the point in the process. Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth. (And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)
Gibs Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 For me the inference was on the most obvious point, Salvation, we believe the same and it is true of SDAdventism today, not a scratch difference. Something is obvious here, The majority aren't going to get through them pearly gates and if the theology of today were true, thar just wouldn't be any lost that darkened some churches door by going in.
